At its core, the idea of traveling 1,200 miles around the coast of Florida in a kayak sounds grueling--the organizers of the Ultimate Florida Challenge warn wouldbe entrants that "even if you are a wellprepared expert, you may die." But Richey, who writes for the Christian Science Monitor, shows in this fast-paced memoir that a persevering spirit can overcome all physical and mental exhaustion. Still feeling the effects of a divorce that threw his world into upheaval, Richey finds solace in his sea kayak and enters the competition, despite the objections of family and friends. Nearly every day and night, he encounters all possible obstacles: physical ailments (blisters, sore muscles, sleep deprivation), the threat of predators like alligators and pythons, and solitude while paddling through the night. On a diet consisting largely of bagels and Snickers bars, Richey travels on, battling himself and the biggest enemy of all: the clock, as the rules mandate the race be completed within 30 days. Loved the Adventure Parts

I was a little concerned over the first third of this book, as it seemed to be more memoir-style ruminations on failed marriage and finding new love than about kayak adventure, but I stuck with it. I'm glad I did. Once the race begins and Richey spends more time telling us about his adventure, as well as personal and historical anecdotes about the areas he traverses, the book became much more exciting. I still found myself skimming the short chapters that seemed written directly for the benefit of his new love, but that's just me. Other readers might find it heartwarming, it just isn't my thing. I think if there were less of that I would give the book another star or two, but that's just my preference. The book I wanted to read wasn't necessarily the one Richey wanted to write, and there really isn't anything wrong at all with what he delivered. There was still plenty here for me to enjoy anyway, and it definitely makes me want to explore Florida.

Amazing Race, Amazing Book

Last night, I read this book about a 1,200-mile boat race around Florida without putting it down. First of all, I love the man against nature theme. The author, Warren Richey, is one cool-headed, thoughtful and courageous guy. Through tides, wild waves, dangerous water-dwelling beings, sun, darkness, exhaustion and fear, Richey comes as close as one can to the rhythm of nature and survive. All day I've been thinking about how on one of the last nights of this crazy race, he navigates the currents at the mouth of the Sewanee River only to plunge his sea kayak--in the utter dark--into the breaking waves of a stormy Gulf of Mexico. What guts and what an adventure! I enjoyed "experiencing" the watery geography (and history) of Florida, not the one we usually visit, but the seas, rivers, creeks and streams, even the oily, concrete-walled waters of the Intercoastal. I came away knowing the swamps, the mud, the uninhabited islands and the occasional manicured estate lawn where Richey hung his hammock, or fell asleep for a few hours after chomping down some food, somehow still able to distinguish reality from his nightmares. But this journey is far more than man against nature, it is the story of a deeply romantic man finding his sea legs after a failed marriage. He's ready to try marriage again, and in fact is dating the woman of his dreams, but has never let her know. Can he make it to the finish line, let alone win the race? Can he work through the pain and disappointment of one marriage to propose another? This book is a great ride all the way.

Fast moving, funny and thought provoking

Just finished Without a Paddle -- in a day -- could not put it down. My S.E. Fla kayak club has paddled many of the areas mentioned and it's fun seeing them through Warren's eyes. Have not had so many laughs reading a book in a long time. Even though I paddle frequently, there is no way I could possibly do the race. But, by Warren's laying out the different portions of the trip, my friends and I realize that we could do it in bits and pieces. This book allows an avid paddler or armchair-paddler to appreciate all the beautiful sights available from the water.

Went to a book review and reading by Warren and he talks just like he writes--very knowledgeable and likeable. Looking forward to another adventure and book.

Excellent Resource, Wonderful Recipes, But Be Careful

I am so glad I bought this book; it agrees with my philosophy about shaping children's palates early, using whole foods, and organic eating in general. The recipes are easy and delicious, and give you ideas for all the way into toddlerhood. I love the inclusion of recipes using meat, fish, and chicken. My daughter has loved everything I have made from this book so far; my husband and I have even eaten a few- with salt and seasoning added for adult taste- and enjoyed them.

I do, however, agree with Lynn W.- USE WISDOM with certain recipes, since the author does not seem to follow the AAP's recommendations about when to introduce certain foods, and seems to lack a current understanding about food allergies in children. There are lots of recipes with cow's milk, tomatoes, and citrus, for example, for very young babies.

Otherwise, I highly recommend this book as an excellent resource.

GREAT book; use wisdom in food introductions, but updated guidlines from the AAP give many of these food items the green light..

I keep seeing people warning against some of the ingredients included in recipes in this book. It is true that as mothers we must use caution when it comes to what our children consume. But keep an open mind ladies (and gentleman) The AAP has set guidelines that we have considered the standard for many years HOWEVER, those guidelines have recently begun to be revised... fish, eggs, citrus and dairy were considered no no's for children under the age of one in previous years, however, if you child has no history of food allergies, and you have no family history of specific allergies (IE citrus, or eggs) then the introduction plan of 1 new food, for 3 -4 days watching for signs of allergic reaction is completely safe. One of the reason the AAP recommends holding off on fish although EXCELLENT for developing baby's eye, brain etc. because of the high concentration of Omega 3 fatty acids... is because conventional store bought/farm raised fish can have toxic levels of mercury and other chemicals in them. If you're going to introduce fish to baby, ALWAYS use wild-caught/organic white fish. Generally if they are going to have one, it's there after the age of 9 months when babies begin to completely rely on their own immune systems and not the antibodies in mothers milk. I'm not saying this to combat others comments, just to bring peace of mind that if you feel as though your child is healthy, and has no health complications (such as known family history) or indicators of food sensitivity's (such as eczema which can indicate a milk protein, soy, or gluten allergy) reflux (you'd want to stay away from the citrus, tomatoes and high acid content foods)etc... GO FOR IT! On the subject of cows milk, which seems to be one of the things I keep seeing mentioned... there is a difference between a glass of milk and CULTURED whole milk products, such as yogurt which she often recommends using... it IS absolutely AMAZING for babies 6 months and older and PERFECTLY SAFE! In cultured milk products the lactose is broken down differently b/c of the fermenting process so it doesn't have the same affect on someone with a general dairy allergy. However, if you have a severe milk PROTEIN allergy, or family history of such, you may want to wait. For Example Stonyfiels farms organic yo'baby yogurt is for babies 6 months of age... so happy yogurting b/c it's SO great for baby... lot's of healthy probiotics,& omega 3 fatty acids...

Many pediatricians recommend against giving eggs and fish in the first year of life because of allergic reactions, but there is no evidence that introducing these nutrient-dense foods after 4 to 6 months of age determines whether your baby will be allergic to them. Give your baby one new food at a time, and wait at least 2 to 3 days before starting another. After each new food, watch for any allergic reactions such as diarrhea, rash, or vomiting. If any of these occur, stop using the new food and consult with your child's doctor.

Within a few months of starting solid foods, your baby's daily diet should include a variety of foods each day that may include the following:

* Breast milk and/or formula
* Meats
* Cereal
* Vegetables
* Fruits
* Eggs and fish

Good Book, Great Food

I bought this book looking for homemade baby food recipes and got so much more. Besides having lots of tasty recipes for each stage of your baby's development it provides valuable nutritional iformation. Each recipe is easy to follow and easy to make. The best part is that they actually taste good! I usually spend 3-4 hours over 2 days to make enough baby food to last a month. A tip, pick a few recipes that use similar ingredients and as Rachel Ray says, "Use it twice, chop it once."

To make my life easier most recipes are suitable to freeze. I freeze them in 1 ounce ice cube trays (mostly the fruit purees to add to yogurt, cottage cheese, or baby cereal) and in 4 ounce portions (for the more complete meals). Some of my baby's favorites are the Lovely Lentils, Apple-Mango Puree (mixed with plain yogurt), and the Sweet Potato with Spinach and Peas. I love this book and I love knowing my baby is eating healthy, tasty food that I've prepared.

and how they managed to sustain such a fantastic vision for over 1

The Avatamsaka Sutra is the definitive statement of Indra's Net, the cosmic Buddhist vision of radical interconnectedness, interrelatedness, interdependence, and nondual interpenetration of all phenomena. It is the ultimate mind-tripping read that will take you into a multi-dimensional mind-space that you never knew existed, wheeling you around the infinity of consciousness from the smallest most insignificant spec in the universe to boundless worlds-within-worlds-upon-worlds... it will leave you wondering who in the hell could have written these texts, and how they managed to sustain such a fantastic vision for over 1,700 pages... it makes Carl Sagan’s universe of “billions of billions” look like child’s play.

The merit you will gain by reading a single sentence of this sutra exceeds the all the merit gained by a thousand Buddhas who’ve liberated the sentient beings of ten billion worlds over ten billion eons. Indeed, even pronouncing one syllable of this sutra will provide you with more merit than constructing ten ka-jillion stupas in this world, while circumambulating Mt. Kailas ten thousand times, and simultaneously teaching the dharma to every sentient being of every eon of ten thousand worlds in each of the ten directions. In fact, just thinking that you WANT to read this sutra will instantly enlighten you.

Seriously, this prodigious text is one of the most fantastic reads that humans have ever created but clearly isn't for the light-hearted or simple-minded. Cleary’s translation is, as usual, gorgeous, magisterial, enlightened. Based on a recommendation from a reviewer on Amazon.com, I started reading it aloud back in 2003 and am only half-way through it. I know nothing that compares to this text. In fact, I know nothing at all. May you, oh Bodhisattva, lose yourself in the infinity that is the Avatamsaka sutra.

The Book Of Books

Once you've shined clear ecstasy accessible from certain poetry; the Upanishads; Zen; Tibetan Buddhism; Kabbalah; the Tao; Zen Master Dogen; Rabbi Moshe Chaim Luzzato, etc......then perhaps you'll be ready for this: the book of all books. What a wondrously joyous reward this book is for anyone who has digested numerous "wisdom books" but never dreamed that this: The Book of Books, even existed. Of its 1,600 pages(!) every word and phrase is to be savored. Are you, perhaps, a bit put off by the startlingly high price? Ha! I paid as much for last month's heating bill...but this book provides a lifetime of sacred warmth. It's TOTALLY worth the price for those who can appreciate the absolute heights of ecstatic wisdom; and I write this review in spite of an (evil) jealous urge to keep this book a secret, to benefit from it's glow without letting anyone else know it exists. But that very glow defeated the evil and I therefore submit this humble review.

Powerful and sacred scripture.

I'm not an expert on buddhism, however this sutra is truly a sacred writing and will require a lot of patience to appreciate the Buddha's teachings. I'm not sure how accurate the translation is but it is more than good enough for a simpleton like me to understand, appreciate and respect the sacred scripture. Thank you Thomas Cleary for bringing a most important text to the english reading community. May all beings be blessed and find emancipation with the teachings the Buddhas has left behind in scriptures.

Larry Connors, CEO and founder of TradingMarkets.com Mr. Connors has over 26 years of experience working in the financial markets industry. This is a no-nonsense, very well written trading strategies book, with statistical back-tracing to support its claims.

There are two major messages in the book, and anything else in the book rotates around these claims:
1. Always Trust long term momentum (never buy the market when it is below its 200 days moving average) and
2. Buy short-term lows, sell short-term highs.

That's all.

I did test the statistical results and did get results that are consistent with the book. But as it is always the case, back-tracing is not a proof for future results, no matter how good the past results are.

A problem which I found with the statistical analysis, is that it completely ignores risk factors, such as standard deviation and the Sharpe ratio and also, their is no evidence for the robustness of the strategies and their susceptibility to small parametric changes.

The book is pretty close in its contents to the corresponding website:
[...] which caused me to feel that the $50 spent on this book aren't justified.

Read it...and my trading is already improved

I am mostly a short-term trader so I buy every book I can find on the subject in search of something that will help to improve my performance. As my wife can attest...I am usually disappointed and throw them into a storage box in our den so I can sell them on eBay. Most of it is pure garbage either written by people who don't trade or who are guessing about what works merely because it looks good in back testing.

On the other hand, Larry Connors' new book on Short Term Strategies is sitting in a place of honor on my book shelf along with the small handful of books that have truly helped me in my trading over the past 20 years. What I appreciate about Larry's research is that he doesn't just look at pretty patterns on a chart. Instead, he finds edges that hardly anybody in the trading world or financial media knows about and builds strategies with simple rules that any trader can apply.

This book contains numerous stock and ETF strategies that, in my opinion, are worth thousands of dollars to any trader who will spend them to learn learning them.

A Gem for the experienced Trader looking for an edge

For a novice to investing, the very slim book might appear to be a letdown. Lacking experince they may not know what they have in their hands. But for the experienced trader looking for an edge or a refinement to an entry, this book is well worth it's money. Unfortunatley, the author hints at the power of combining strategies and personalizing them, but he provides few examples to guide novices. The experinced trader will take the presented "edges" and back test them on a platform like TD Ameritrade's Strategy Desk or MetaStock, and they will find they are able to verify the value of the disclosed strategies. What is presented in this book is very powerful, but it is one of many parts of the process to become a better trader. I personally have found great value in the RSI work and the simple Double 7's strategy. My first small 100 share test trade paid for the book more than three times over.

About the Author
Doug Newsom, Ph.D., APR and Fellow Public Relations Society of America (PRSA) is a Texas Christian University professor emerita of The Schieffer School of Journalism and the senior co-author of THIS IS PR AND PUBLIC RELATIONS WRITING. She also is the co-author of three other books and the author of another two, as well as the author of four current book chapters. She is former member of the Commission on Public Relations Education, former chair of PRSA's College of Fellows and is a past chair of the Accrediting Committee for the Accrediting Council on Education for Journalism and Mass Communications. She has been president of the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication, Southwest Education Council for Journalism and Mass Communication, Texas Public Relations Association, and both the Dallas and Fort Worth chapters of PRSA. Dr. Newsom has been national faculty advisor to PRSSA. She has been head of the PR Division of AEJMC and served as chair of its former division heads. Awards include the Institute for Public Relations' Pathfinder, PRSA Outstanding Educator, Public Relations Foundation of Texas's Educator of the Year Award, Texas Public Relations Association's Golden Spur, the Association for Women in Communications Headliner, and in 2010 she was named to the Hall of Excellence of TCU's Schieffer School of Journalism. She has served Fulbright teaching appointments in India and Singapore; given workshops in South Africa, Hungary, Bulgaria, Poland and Vanuatu; and taught in Latvia and England. She has been chair of the Fulbright discipline committee, served 18 years on a gas research institute's advisory council and was one of the first women elected to the board of a publicly held company, she was the first woman elected to the board of ONEOK where she served 24 years until reaching mandatory retirement age. Currently, her volunteer public relations work is for Rotary International.

Jim Haynes is the director of research, senior consultant and a member of the Board of Directors of QuickSilver Interactive Group, Inc. of Dallas, Texas. He also is an adjunct professor at UNT, where he teaches public relations writing. Accredited in Public Relations (APR), he is a member of Public Relations Society of America's College of Fellows and is a Certified Records Manager. He served on the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA) national Board of Directors and the Universal Accreditation Board, responsible for accreditation for Public Relations Society of America PRSA and eight other participating organizations. Former assistant dean in the College of Communication at The University of Texas at Austin he taught public relations there and at the University of North Texas, Texas State University-San Marcos, Southern Methodist University and Texas Christian University. He has spoken at professional conferences and led seminars and workshops throughout the US, Canada, England and Norway. Co-founder of the Public Relations Foundation of Texas, he served as chairman of that organization as well as president of the Texas Public Relations Association (TPRA) and the North Texas (now Dallas) Chapter of PRSA. He has received numerous national, state and local awards from public relations organizations, including lifetime membership in TPRA. Through Jim Haynes Consulting, he provides consulting services to clients that have included major corporations throughout the United States, as well as associations, municipalities, state agencies and non-profit organizations in the US, Canada, Norway and Sweden. He worked with the Norwegian Institute of Journalism for 20 years, coordinating a two-week short course for Norwegian newspaper editors at The University of Texas at Austin.

About the Author
Martin Anthony is Professor of Mathematics at the London School of Economics (LSE) and Academic Co-ordinator for Mathematics on the University of London International Programmes for which LSE has academic oversight. He has over 20 years' experience of teaching students at all levels of university and is the author of four books, including the textbook Mathematics for Economics and Finance: Methods and Modelling (Cambridge University Press, 1996). He also has extensive experience of preparing distance learning materials.

Michele Harvey currently lectures at the London School of Economics, where she has taught linear algebra as part of the first year mathematical methods course for over 20 years, as the course evolved from about 100 students to over 600. She has been praised for her teaching in student surveys and the student newspaper. She is also Chief Examiner for the Advanced Linear Algebra course on the University of London International Programmes and has co-authored with Martin Anthony the study guides for advanced linear algebra and linear algebra on this programme. She has over 40 years' experience of teaching students at various levels of university in London and in New York.
