Excellent lo-cal textbook for teens and low-level college students.

For high school students and intellectually unripe college students, this textbook is a highly readable introduction to an important slice of U.S. history. With generous use of graphics, text boxes, and thematic titles, this book helps guide the student into a remarkably well-rounded history. Despite limited amounts of narration, the textbook helps illuminate the social dimensions of a nation undergoing powerful changes.
Whereas some textbooks fixate on the presidents, kings, and celebrities of history, this book steers students to everyday voices and overlooked events. U.S. was not made solely by Congress: it was made foremost by everyday people, and this book admirably conveys that message.
The book gives strong attention to the horrors of racism and red-baiting that were terrorizing millions of Americans fighting for a better life. I think the book could have done much more with immigration and women. Both were at the center of society and politics between the wars. There are countless questions for discussion: clearly this text is meant to be used in a classroom.
A book like this, with so little text, is bound to omit massive amounts of history. What it does do--and quite well--is introduce the student to history and show that it is relevant and interesting. The U.S. that easily spills out of the pages is enticing and fascinating. It is likely to lead even a remedial student to learn a good deal of history and hunger for more.
