Robert H. Glew, PhD, is Emeritus Professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the University of New Mexico Medical School. Dr. Glew has taught medical biochemistry at three medical schools in the United States and a medical school in West Africa.

Great resource for Medical Students and others!

This is an excellent resource for covering the medically relevant aspects of biochemistry and metabolism. The information is well-organized and concise, and does a wonderful job of integrating information across the spectrum of metabolism. This text helped to both consolidate and enhance my understanding of Biochemistry, and is the perfect resource for medical and other health-sciences students!

Relevant info for med school and boards

This book contains clinically relevant biochemistry for medical students. The chapters on cholesterol are great, and more accurate than other texts. I had trouble with biochemistry--study the pathways over and over again, then read the text, and it will all make sense. Also, the clinical portions of this book are very pragmatic. And the writing is clear and the text concise. Relevant pathology for boards is covered at the ends of chapters.

Superb Medical Writing

This book by Miriam Rosenthal and Robert Glew is a rare example of superb writing and excellent pedagogy. Because the writing is so very good, the book is easy to read.

The book relates biochemistry to medicine, and so is more useful and interesting than most biochemistry textbooks. It's a huge improvement over the pretentious and obtuse textbook _Biochemistry_ by Berg et al.

It's also easy to handle--one can pick it up with two fingers.

An excellent resource for inspiration, techniques and safety

After reading Cindy Jenkins' humorous and informative "Making Glass Beads", I was skeptical about another publication addressing additional techniques and scientific aspects of lampworking. However, Mr. Dunham's book provides just the right combination of inspirational quotes, technical direction and vital safety information that every artisan needs, from hobbyist to the more serious glass artist. Techniques begin with simple explanations of the physical properties of glass, and move through graduated levels of complexity at a perfect pace. Mr. Dunham's writing style is honest and encouraging, and he willingly shares his own observations in a way that demonstrates thorough knowledge of his subject without the reader needing a Physics 101 course! While exhorting the reader to practice and expand creativity through hands-on experience, Mr. Dunham discusses important safety and ergonomic aspects of lampworking. The illustrations are clear and support the text well; inserting a gallery of contemporary glasswork was a stroke of pure genius. This book will serve as an invaluable resource for technical information on glass compatibility, studio set-up and many other essential components of the lampworking process, all written in easily understandable language.

The Persistence of Ruskin's Religious Impulse

Michael Wheeler argues convincingly that, despite his own protests to the contrary, John Ruskin was influenced throughout his life by his deepseated belief in a benevolent God. This thesis runs counter to conventional critical opinion that holds Ruskin abandoned religious belief in 1858, and that his later work provides a secular alternative to organized religion.
This work is well researched and intended for other scholars. Even the literate, well-read generalist outside 19th century studies may have difficulty tracing Wheeler's argument, since he references hundreds of works by Ruskin and by those who have written about him in the past century. Nevertheless, the argument is well constructed and should serve as a corrective to the tendency of postmodernist critics to revel in the agnosticism and atheism that pops up in several of Ruskin's writings during the middle years of his career.

Our understanding of them is still in its early stages and empirical research in the field of globalization of high arts is still scarce.

This book brings together recent, multidisciplinary, cutting edge research on the globalization of art markets. Focusing on different regions, including China, Russia, India and Japan, as well as different institutions and organizations, the chapters in this volume study the extent to which art markets indeed become global. They show the various barriers to, and the effects of, globalization on the art market's organizational dynamics and the everyday narratives of people working within the art industry. In doing so, they recognize the coexistence of various ecologies of contemporary art exchange, and sketch the presence of resilient local networks of actors and organizations. Some chapters show Europe and the US continue to dominate, especially when taking art market rankings and the most powerful events such as Art Basel into account. However, other chapters argue that things such as art fairs are truly global events and that the 'architecture of the art market' which has originally been developed in Europe and the US from the 19th century onwards, is increasingly adopted across the world.

Olav Velthuis is Associate Professor at the Department of Sociology and Anthropology of the University of Amsterdam. He is currently studying the emergence and development of art markets in the BRIC-countries (Brazil, Russia, India and China). Velthuis is the author of Imaginary Economics (NAi Publishers, 2005) and Talking Prices. Symbolic Meanings of Prices on the Market for Contemporary Art (Princeton University Press, 2005), which received the Viviana Zelizer Distinguished Book Award of the American Sociological Association for the best book in economic sociology (2006). Together with Maria Lind of Tensta Konsthall (Stockholm), he recently edited the book Contemporary Art and Its Commercial Markets A Report on Current Conditions and Future Scenarios (Sternberg Press, 2012). A recognized authority on art markets, his journalistic writings have appeared in among others Artforum, the Art Newspaper and the Financial Times.

Stefano Baia Curioni is Associate Professor at the Department of Institutional Analysis of Bocconi University in Milano. He is founder, former Director and vice President of the ASK (Art, Science, Knowledge) research center of Bocconi University, visiting professor of cultural economics at IMT institute Lucca for the Phd Heritage management and development. In the last fifteen years Baia Curioni concentrated his research and teaching activities in the field of cultural institutions and policies with a specific interest in the historical analysis of the transformation of art system and fields. His last book, Mercanti dell'Opera, is dedicated to the economic history of Italian Operatic music scene in the XIX and XX century. Within the ASK research center, Baia Curioni is leading a research project on the contemporary art legitimation processes and served the Italian Ministry of Culture for different intervention in the last years.
