Neural Control Engineering: The Emerging Intersection between Control Theory and Neuroscience (Computational Neuroscience Series), by Stev

Over the past sixty years, powerful methods of model-based control engineering have been responsible for such dramatic advances in engineering systems as autolanding aircraft, autonomous vehicles, and even weather forecasting. Over those same decades, our models of the nervous system have evolved from single-cell membranes to neuronal networks to large-scale models of the human brain. Yet until recently control theory was completely inapplicable to the types of nonlinear models being developed in neuroscience. The revolution in nonlinear control engineering in the late 1990s has made the intersection of control theory and neuroscience possible. In Neural Control Engineering, Steven Schiff seeks to bridge the two fields, examining the application of new methods in nonlinear control engineering to neuroscience. After presenting extensive material on formulating computational neuroscience models in a control environment -- including some fundamentals of the algorithms helpful in crossing the divide from intuition to effective application -- Schiff examines a range of applications, including brain-machine interfaces and neural stimulation. He reports on research that he and his colleagues have undertaken showing that nonlinear control theory methods can be applied to models of single cells, small neuronal networks, and large-scale networks in disease states of Parkinson's disease and epilepsy. With Neural Control Engineering the reader acquires a working knowledge of the fundamentals of control theory and computational neuroscience sufficient not only to understand the literature in this trandisciplinary area but also to begin working to advance the field. The book will serve as an essential guide for scientists in either biology or engineering and for physicians who wish to gain expertise in these areas.

Review

For many years, Steve Schiff's pioneering work has led the way toward a deeper understanding of the brain as a dynamical system. In this beautifully written and groundbreaking book, he presents a new synthesis of neuroscience, computation, and engineering. Neural Control Engineering will be a welcome resource for all working in this emerging field, and it will guide and inspire the next generation of students. -- Olaf Sporns, Provost Professor, Department of Psychological and Brain Sciences, Indiana University, author of Networks of the Brain

Predicting and Controlling Brain Activity
By Jack Cowan
Niels Bohr has been quoted as saying "the hardest thing to do in science is to predict, especially the future!" This book is concerned, in large part, with this problem, in its application to controlling the dynamics of the brain. The problem involves collecting observations of brain activity, filtering out the effects of noise and measurement errors, and controlling brain dynamics. In many ways this set of problems originated in Gauss's least squares method of minimizing the effects of measurement errors, which is over 200 years old. But it was during the period between World Wars 1 and 2, that the current methods for dealing with noisy data in the exercise of predictive control were really started by Norbert Wiener, and by Andrey Kolmogorov in 1941. Wiener's theory considered data in the form of continuously changing data represented by stationary random processes with Gaussian statistics, and Kolmogorov studied very similar processes generated by data sampled at discrete times. Essentially Wiener and Kolmogorov developed filters to remove the effects of noise and measurement errors from the data, so the theory is often called the Wiener-Kolmogorov filtering theory.

The problem with both theories was that they dealt only with linear, stationary and Gaussian processes. It took another 20 years before Rudy Klmn (1960) introduced a filter theory to deal with noisy dynamical systems, and another 40 years or so before the Kalman filter techniques were used to estimate the parameters of dynamics generated by various equations describing neural activity. Schiff's book is the first comprehensive account of this development. Schiff is perhaps uniquely qualified to write this account. He is both a practicing neurosurgeon and computational neuroscientist, and a pioneer in the application of control techniques to problems such as chaos control.

The early chapters provide a brisk introduction to least squares minimization and its connection with Bayes Rule, and thence to iterative methods for data assimilation, i.e., the processes that incorporate measurements into various models of neural activity, in particular to the Kalman filter approach for discrete data, and the Kalman-Bucy filter (1961) for continuous data. The first neural examples considered are the Hodgkin-Huxley equations (1952) that model the ionic current flows that trigger current pulses in neurons, and various simplified models such as the Fitzhugh-Nagumo equations (1961). Schiff shows that such simplified models often lead to effective controls of neuronal activity. In keeping with this, the next chapter deals with a population model of large-scale neural activity, the Wilson-Cowan equations (1972, 1973). These are essentially a spatio-temporal extension of Fitzhugh-Nagumo like equations, and Schiff shows how a Kalman filter approach can again be used in an efficient way to control their dynamics. The final two chapters of this sequence deal with the construction of ab initio models and filters based directly on data assimilation, and with the inadequacies of all such models. Chapter 7, the first of these two chapters, studies the utility of such techniques as Principal Components Analysis, and Singular Value Decomposition and other techniques, as ways of abstracting from data sets, a set of uncorrelated linear combinations of parts of the data set, that carry the essential information in the set. The first few such components can then be used in a Kalman filter approach. Examples are described of applications to Image Analysis, both static and dynamic, and to the analysis of Spatiotemporal Brain Activity.

The final chapters, 9 through13 are perhaps the most interesting. Chapter 9 covers such topics as Apostolos Georgopoulos' discoveries in 1982-1986, that the direction of a limb movement is uniquely predicted by the activity of a (small) population of neurons in the monkey motor cortex. Essentially each neuron in the population is tuned to respond maximally for a preferred direction of limb movement, and the vector sum of the population activity drives the intended movement. [There is a corresponding effect in the visual cortex: the vector sum of the population activity of a (small) population of neurons in the visual cortex accurately represents the local orientation of the edge of an object in the visual field, as was demonstrated by David Hubel and Torsten Wiesel in 1959-1974.]
These findings were seminal for the development of brain-machine interfaces in the form, for example, of implanted arrays of microelectrodes. The resulting deluge of data required much assimilation via Kalman filters. Chapter 10 provides a very interesting introduction to Parkinson's Disease, and the models thereof developed by David Terman and colleagues (2002-2004). These models are simplified Hodgkin-Huxley-like models, and provide a first attempt to model Parkinson's Disease and to provide insight into the efficacy or otherwise of deep brain stimulation. Chapters 11-12 provide a brief look at the use of electric fields to stimulate the brain, and at recent attempts to understand and control Epileptic Seizures. The final chapter, 13, is more speculative, but raises the possibility that brain themselves implement Kalman filters.

In summary, I found this book extremely interesting and well written. I have only some minor caveats. There is almost nothing about Wiener-Kolmogorov filters. In Chapter 11 the method of reducing the resistive tree structure of a neural dendrite to an equivalent cylinder is introduced with no citation of Wilfrid Rall's introduction of this method (based on impedance matching) in 1957-1960. Apart from these, this book is a gold mine for anyone interested in how to model brain activity, and how to control it.

Interdisciplinary Gem
By Thomas S
In terms of what this book is about, I have not much to say beyond what a previous reviewer said. What I want to emphasize is the extraordinary fact that all these chapters are offered by the same author. He has obviously spent many years of his life to learn and practise enough engineering, mathematics, statistics, physics, philosophy - beyond his primary profession as a neurosurgeon trained in physiology - to meaningfully bring together what is needed to advance his field beyond this point.

Why should you read this book - beyond admiring the last polymath?

Case 1: You plan to attend Prof. Schiff's Course - well then it's obvious

Case 2: You plan to teach a course in a related field - then you can take this text as a blueprint for your preparation

Case 3: You plan to do work in neural control engineering - then you will find your learning agenda set in this book. You will probably master one or two of the branches covered, but you need to develop some intuition on the others as well

Case 4: You are just curious what is going on in this area - that's how I came to read it. Then you will understand what it is like to go beyond trial-and-error in a field where full understanding of the inner workings of the system is way out of reach.

The book is a very entertaining demonstration that intuition is of utmost importance in interdisciplinary work - and that intuition comes as the result of hard work.

What I personally enjoyed is that where other authors offer bold statements and hyperbole, Steven Schiff shows courage and hope. That is a major difference.

Hope and courage is needed in particular for the last chapter "Assimilating Minds". The author is well aware that anything achieved so far in neural control engineering looks like mere stamp collecting if you had set out to understand the mind - as many did. But why not take the finest stamps from distant countries as inspiration and encouragement to eventually go to these places yourself!

The volume is staged as a serious text in a specialized field. So color illustrations are offered not for glamour but where it helps to understand a figure. For a high quality hardcover edition of a cutting edge text, I find the book reasonably priced.

I can give my full recommendation.

A Research Monograph on Neuronal Models and Related Filtering Problems
By Luigi Fatori
This is a very nice interdisciplinary book. It deals with neuronal models and a number of issues related to filtering and model uncertainty. This book will prove helpful for those who need to grasp knowledge about neurons, models and data from both. There is much information on historical development of the field which is an extra benefit. The author succeeds in making a strong point for Kalman filtering (in one of its nonlinear versions, the UKF) as a tool for handling, model, data and uncertainty. The book, which is very well written, reads more like a research monograph than a textbook and the bias is clearly towards neural issues albeit the author's efforts to relate the material to control engineering. Given the "plant" considered by the author, it is fair to say that his efforts have been quite successful.

An epic romance
By Amazon Customer
I love this book. I read it as a teenager and now again as an adult, although it's been very difficult to find, since I couldn't remember the title. This review will be a bit spoiler-y (I'm warning you now) because when I was trying to find it, every other review was just vague enough that I wasn't positive this was the novel I was looking for. It's the story of Dana O'Malley raised dirt-poor in the swamps by her mother and lecherous step-father after her birth father abandoned her unmarried pregnant mother. Dana escapes from the swamps with the help of a Creole aristocrat, Julian, who takes her as his ward, causing a scandal. Dana is haunted by prophetic dreams about the man she will love, interpreted by a fellow swamp-woman who has 'the sight' that she will love four men. Two she will be in love with, the other two she will just love. One of them is good, but does bad. And one of them will want her in a way that is unnatural.

Needless to say, Dana is never accepted by the old New Orleans aristocracy, even though she transforms herself into a lady. She has a tragic love affair with her benefactor's brother, and escapes New Orleans, eventually becoming a very successful actress, the career that leads her to the final two men of her prophecy. There is a happily-ever-after that rang so true to me. I loved that the 'true' love didn't woo her with poetry and jewels, but spoke to her the way two soul mates actually speak to each other (at least at the very end when the conflict is over-there's also a lot of fighting that's not so romantic, but honest nonetheless). I'll be ordering Jennifer Wilde paperbacks in the marketplace one by one. If only they would be released on Kindle!

Great Book
By A Customer
This novel suprised me since it didn't follow the usual "love at first sight" situations of romance novels. I liked the fact that Dana does come to realize that her true love is with a man that she could be herself. A true novel idea for this genre of books.

A breath-taking book.

Superb characters, superb writing. This is actually the last book J Wilde wrote. As all of J wildes books, this was enchanting, a little similar to Angel In Scarlet as the main character is an actress, but enjoyable all the same.

Three Hundred Chess Games - 'Dreihundert Schachpartien' - English Language Edition, by Siegbert Tarrasch

Grandmaster Siegbert Tarrasch's 'Three Hundred Chess Games' is one of the most helpful and instructive chess books ever published. The original German work, 'Dreihundert Schachpartien' was initially intended to be a well-annotated record of three hundred of Grandmaster Tarrasch's best games, but it quickly became a favorite textbook for chess teachers. As more and more copies were sold, the book was eventually recognized as a valuable middle game treatise. Now available for the first time in English, chess players of all strengths can greatly increase their understanding of the game of chess by simply playing through and enjoying these masterful games. As a bonus, Dr. Tarrasch weaves a fascinating and witty autobiographical sketch as he lays out his brilliant system of chess play.

The modern chess student will find a wealth of positional ideas, sharp tactics and elegant endings as he studies these exciting and original games. Tarrasch's easily understandable annotations show clearly why he was given the title, praeceptor mundi (teacher of the world). The book is highly entertaining and will lead to a greater understanding of chess by all who use it.

Long Overdue: An Instructive Classic
By Timothy McGrew
In 1914, the Tsar of Russia conferred upon the five finalists of the St. Petersburg tournament the title "Grandmaster," inaugurating a tradition of singling out those whose demonstrated ability stood out even among masters. Siegbert Tarrasch was one of those five, along with Lasker, Capablanca, Alekhine and Marshall. Though he was never able to overcome the supreme tactical genius of Lasker in their struggles for the World Championship, Tarrasch earned the respect of his peers with a string of brilliant tournament and match performances that made him a natural challenger and secured his place in history as a great player.

Yet Tarrasch's fame today rests more upon his pedagogic writings than on his tournament victories, for he bequeathed to us a volume of three hundred meticulously annotated games that served as the model for the post-war generation of rising stars. For three quarters of a century, this seminal volume -- hailed as "one of the monuments of our game" by GM Reuben Fine -- has been available only to those who could read it in the original German.

Sol Schwarz's translation of Three Hundred Chess Games is, therefore, a most welcome contribution to the history of chess, making this masterpiece available for the first time in English. And a very workmanlike job it is: the translation is generally excellent, only occasionally betraying a trace of the Teutonic original, and the value of the volume is enhanced by the clear and plentiful diagrams and meticulous indices. As an historical work alone it would deserve high praise.

But the book is of more than historical merit -- it is an abundantly instructive manual of chess praxis for any aspiring student. Tarrasch's annotations give a superb insight into the fundamental concepts of modern chess. Building on and in some cases modifying Steinitz's fundamental principles, Tarrasch is at his crusty best when stating, dogmatically and forcefully, the proper way to handle recurring pawn structures, pronouncing on the relative merits of open files and doubled pawns, or stressing the necessity for active play even at the cost of material.

To understand master games we mortals need a guide, even one whose evaluations are occasionally a shade more black and white than a modern grandmaster's might be. And the games in this collection are exceptionally valuable to students because the strategic themes and tactical interchanges lie, with the aid of Tarrasch's illuminating commentary, just within the grasp of a talented amateur. Those who quibble that Tarrasch's commentaries on his own pet defense to the Queen's Gambit (1.d4 d5 2.c4 e6 3.Nc3 c5!?) or the line of the French that bears his name (1.e4 e6 2.d4 d5 3.Nd2) are overly rigid should note that he actually abandoned his advocacy of the latter (see the notes to game 287!) and that no lesser player than Kasparov himself got good results in his youth with the former. Indeed, if the talented amateur absorbs the level of strategic understanding and tactical insight offered here in Tarrasch's pithy precepts, he will have time enough to refine that understanding -- for having done so, he will stand at the threshold of mastery himself.

About time! A historic milestone in chess literature.
By Dr. J. Sarfati
Siegbert Tarrasch won a string of tournament victories in the early 1890s, making him arguably the best player in the world. But he passed up the opportunity to play the aging Steinitz (against whom he had +3-0) for the world title. So Lasker won the title instead in 1895, and forever after put Tarrasch in the shade, although he was still in the world's top five for another 20 years.
Tarrasch was also a great chess teacher. However, his writings can be very dogmatic, and his comments on some opening seem rather humourous in their naivety to modern masters. His writings seemed designed to make chess seem simpler and more rule-based than it really is. IM John Watson's brilliant book _Secrets of Modern Chess Strategy_ goes into this in far more detail.
It's very obvious that chess has progressed immensely in 100 years. So while this book is very instructive, it must be read with some caution. But it is a very important classic, that it's a pity that it hasn't been part of the learning English-speaking player's reading list until now. On the other hand, it was translated into Russian at least 12 years ago, since I gladly purchased a copy when I was there in 1988 despite my very limited Russian.
And it must be said that he was not nearly so dogmatic in his play as in his writings. There are a number of examples of almost Nimzovitchian ideas.
One instructive moment is his analysis of his victory on the Black side of the Advance French against Paulsen. After the standard moves 1 e4 e6 2 d4 d5 3 e5 c5 4 c3 Nc6 5 Nf3 Qb6 6 Bd3, Tarrasch gives his next move 6 ... cxd4 an exclamation mark, and points out that 6 ... Bd7 allows 7 dxc5. Yet almost everyone, even Watson, thinks that Tarrasch's great rival Nimzovitch was such a radical when he played this against Salwe many years later!

Excellent edition of a classic

Excellent edition of a classic, true it may not contain all the biographical details of the original German book, but it was pleasant to play through the games.

The Timeless Racer: Machines of a Time Traveling Speed Junkie (English, German and French Edition), by Daniel Simon

At a stunning size of 12" x 14" (30.5cm x 35.5cm), and with full spread images spanning 24" in width, this first book of a new fiction series will open the doors to a parallel history of racing. Daniel Simon designed for Bugatti, Lotus, Formula 1 and penned unforgettable vehicles for Hollywood movies like Tron: Legacy or Oblivion. This is his second book after Cosmic Motors.
Simon will present in this series over the next years fictitious racing machines at impeccable detail up to 50 megapixel, including vehicle specs and maps of the tracks they raced on. All vehicles and characters are explained through the carefully written story of racer Vic Cooper, who time-travels to the past and the future to compete in the most challenging motor races between 1916 and 2615. This is episode 1, the year 2027, written in English, French and German.

Top Gear magazine says on the back cover: ' After Cosmic Motors and his adventures in Hollywood, this is Daniel Simon's next big coup. '

Design fans, car enthusiasts, CG addicts and science-fiction aficionados can enjoy Simon's parallel world through hyper-real renderings, drawings and photography of fictional drivers, managers and beautiful women. This first episode puts three uniquely designed race cars in the spotlight: The 1981 Masucci X-5, the 2027 Masucci X-7 and the 2027 Prideux -Martin MF/27.

The foreword has been written by racing legend Jacky Ickx, who raced in the 1960s, '70s and '80s for many famed teams such as Ferrari, McLaren, Porsche, Brabham or Lotus. He is the only driver to have won in Formula One, Can-Am, Le Mans, and the Paris-Dakar rally.

Stunning vehicle designs from Daniel Simon again
By Parka
[[VIDEOID:moZ5UKPCTQX7OB]]Daniel Simon who put out the amazing vehicle concept art book Cosmic Motors in 2007 is finally back with a new book in The Timeless Racer.

After Cosmic Motors was published, he has went on to work on films like Tron: Legacy, Prometheus, Marvel's Captain America and Oblivion.

The Timeless Racer is Daniel Simon's personal project, one that he took time off in 2011 from movie work to create. It's a cumulative of 4,500 hours of work in the book.

It's a big 12 by 14 inch hardcover book. The beautiful cover is of matte smooth surface. There are only 72 pages so you'll most likely be left wanting more after looking at the amazing visuals and work inside, and also if you compared it to the 176-page Cosmic Motors.

The book is designed like one of those luxurious picture books on race cars and legends. In this case, we are introduced to the world of futuristic racing with a time-traveling race driver Vic Cooper, and his record-breaking team Masucci.

The visuals are created with a blend of photography and 3D renders. The huge canvas of the book really shows off the detail and beauty of the cars. The gloss, decals and designs are just wonderful. There are also some schematic concept sketches. The designs of the cars are like super evolved F1 race cars but sleeker. They are not exactly sci-fi designs but feel real enough that they could be from the future.

Even the photo shoots are handled with attention to detail with custom made costumes, and even in one picture, some girl was wearing a pair of headphones, on them were printed with Masucci logo. Vic Cooper's boots are also stamped with those logos. Look at the photos carefully to spot all these little details.

Towards the back, there are also some race track layouts, and behind-the-scenes photos on how the photos were created.

It's an artbook of stunning visuals.

Note that in addition to the standard hardcover edition, there are also the limited slipcase edition and an even more limited Pitlane-club edition. Those would be available on publisher Design Studio Press website. The books come with English, French and German text. And there's a Japanese edition as well.

(See more pictures of the book on my blog. Just visit my Amazon profile for the link.)

Amazing Book - Super High Quality Pictures, Great Story, Must Have in Your Collection
By Jason
Daniel Simon does it again, this is truly a masterpiece collection of pictures from the racing world of the future. You may know Daniel's work from Tron, Oblivion etc and his latest work continues his tradition of unique and eye-catching designs. If you're a racing fan or know someone who is, definitely get this book. It will sell out. The book is huge, and the colors and design of the cars are top notch. The level of detail is crazy, from the tire smears on the body panels, to the dirt and grim from racing, to the carbon fiber weave, tire treads The story-line is great, and I can't wait for future editions. I could truly go on and on but I'll stop so I don't sound like a crazy person. You will not be disappointed with this book.

Great book. I'm neither a car guy or future ...
By Ken Ward
Great book. I'm neither a car guy or future fantasy fan, but as a designer, I find Daniel Simon's work among the most inspiring of all modern designers. Gorgeous machines, a brief, but solid, engaging and unique story line and a very nice coffee table format art book.
As an added bonus - It's fun to see peoples reaction. It catches 'em off guard a bit... after a few beers, it threw my buddy a curve. I played him and said, "Yeah, your a car guy and you haven't seen this race series?" A gal friend, who has no interest in cars, but an eye for design, said "Wow, how beautiful, I want to go there. Where is this?" I make sure people see it now.

About the Author
Sassie Lewis is a born and bred Australian. She lives on the outskirts of Brisbane Queensland, with her husband, two daughters, one son and a dog that hates having a bath. She swears like a sailor, and blames her ability to over share personal matters - matters that fall into that TMI category - on a faulty brain to mouth filter, that forgets to tell her “This isn’t appropriate dinner conversation”. An avid reader since childhood. Sassie came across erotic romance in her mid-twenties, falling deeply, madly in lust with the genre instantly. And has had wet panties ever since. With her somewhat skewed and unique view of the world, along with a little encouragement from her father, she thought what the heck! and she penned her first erotic romance. She hopes to draw you into the world she’s created, and leave you as breathless and wanting, for her fictional friends, as she became, while writing them.

SMOKING HOT!!! WOW!!!
By Brittany's Book Blog
This book had me salivating from the moment I started reading. We meet Cynfor (although he calls himself Sin). He is proudly watching his only son, Tyson, graduate. Sin is a hard man, who doesn't love easily, but the type of man that would do (and has done) anything for his family. He passionately loves 2 things in his life - his family and his business. He owns Throttle, a succesful car and bike workshop. It has kept his life full and busy - until now.

At graduation, Tyson introduces his family to Georgia, a buxom young lady who instantly has Sin paying way too much attention. She is the sweetest fruit, forbidden, but Sin cannot help the instant attraction he feels towards her. He tries to fight what he feels for, but the first time the two are alone together sparks fly.

Sin walks away from Georgia and threatens her to stay away from his son. However, he soon discovers that Georgia and Tyson are in fact not together. The two start up a relationship which is full of heat and passion. Sin is so alpha and likes his own way - especially in the bedroom. Georgia, although a strong and independent woman succumbs to his will - and what happens will leave you hot and bothered! WOW!

Sin finds out that Georgia and Tyson have been keeping a secret from him - a whopper of a secret. He is devastated that the two people he cares about most in the world could have lied to him.

Will love be able to conquer all? Will the truth finally set Tyson and Georgia free?

I FLOVED this book. Sassie Lewis is a new author, and this is one of her first books. I was enthralled from the get go.

Sin was made of all my dreams - he was a little bit rough around the edges. He was all alpha, covered in tattoos and had a filthy mouth. He was passionate from the outset, and he made sure in no uncertain terms that Georgia knew he was in charge. I know that may make me seem a little backwards in my thinking, but every girl wants a man to take charge (even if it is only every now and then).

Georgia was a refreshing change of a character. She was on the voluptuous side, and although she thought of this as a negative (as all of us BBW's do), Sin quickly showed her how beautiful she really was. Georgia had also overcome insurmountable odds - and was a born fighter. She is someone that protects her friends with every fibre of her being, but also someone that loves intensely. I love that although she had come from a fairly hard life, she was still soft, kind and good.

I am giving this book 4.5 stars. It had everything I loved - a dirty talking bad boy, who was oooooh so good. A lot of steamy, hot and smoking hot sex. A beautiful story line that kept me riveted from the onset. My only request is that we get to see more of Sin and Georgia - I loved the epilogue, but wish it would have been a little bit more in the future.

Well done Sassie Lewis. I look forward to what you have to say next.

Sin has lived his life the same way for the last 21 years...for his son. His son was left on his doorstep when Sin was 17. So from then on, Tyson became priority number one. Sin lived with his parents until Tyson was 10 when he made their life their own. He focused on Tyson and his automotive business, Throttle. One thing that was a constant in Sin’s life was the many women that came and went. But no matter what, he always provided a good life for the two of them. He never thought about a serious relationship because no one was worthy enough of Tyson's love.

Georgia has no one to lean on or help support her except her ailing foster mother, who is in a nursing home battling dementia. She just graduated college and is working three jobs just to get by. She is proud of her accomplishments but there is something missing. That is until she meets Sin.

Sin feels horrible that he is attracted to his son's girl, not knowing that they are just friends. Tyson though, has a secret that he has been keeping from his father because he is afraid of how he will react. Georgia knows what Tyson is keeping from Sin but also knows that it isn't her place to give that information out.

Sin and Georgia begin a very quick yet powerful whirlwind romance. Sin never realized what his life was missing until he met Georgia. When Tyson's secret comes out, Sin is hurt by both Tyson and Georgia for keeping it from him. Can Sin get passed his hurt feelings once he has a heart to heart with his beloved son? And can Georgia forgive Sin for his hasty words and actions?

This was a great debut by Sassie Lewis. I loved that I was able to become so invested in the characters and their lives in such a short time. You really wanted Sin to finally get his happy ending in life since he had spent so much time focusing on his son and his business. You also really wanted Georgia to finally have that family she has missed out on her whole life. I have to say, I wish the book was a bit longer so we would have been able to delve deeper into all of their lives.

Great Debut
By RelentlessBookChic
Great debut by Sassie Lewis!! Throttle is told in a male POV which I really like and find easier to read!

It is a fast paced book, very hot scenes and likable characters. Sin is the owner of Throttle a motorcycle shop but what I loved most was that he was a single dad. The story introduced us to Tyler (his son), Georgia and Sin's mother..who is quite charming and all of the characters were REAL. Real flaws, insecurities and issues. The chemistry between Sin and Georgia is tangible throughout the book, the love he feels for his son also a fave of mine. There were a few little things that I found a little far fetched but all in entertainment, right.

So give it a try and see if it's your thing!

Slight gripes, but still at least a 4.5. A necessary companion.
By romevi
(Apologies for the scattered review. I wrote it as things came to mind.)

I started the game as soon as the guide was delivered. For me, I love to play J/RPGs, and love even more to get as close to 100% as possible. Unfortunately, I just don't have the time or patience to venture on my own without a guide. So, for most single-player games I get, I always search for the corresponding guide.

I haven't played a game this in-depth in a couple of years, so I'm not sure how guides these days are laid out. That said, the main things I look for in a guide are ease of navigability if side quests, etc., are located in the back; pictures explaining difficult sections; and detailed maps. This guide has it all. Just like the game itself, this guide wastes little time going over the basics and jumps straight into the walk-through. There are, of course, some primers on the basics of the game (items, aspects of game play, combat, horse training, etc.).

Some of my favorite guides are the Pokemon ones, and that's only because it's fairly straightforward if you use just the maps, which I do. I like to spend little time reading the guide and more time playing the game, so most of the time I just look at the map, see where the items/trainers are, and get them. Sometimes I'll read texts on gym trainers, puzzles, or other more difficult portions of the game. That's what I like to do in a guide. While I love sites like GameFAQs, I use it only when a published guide isn't available.
Some of the guides I've hated were a handful of the older Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts guides; I felt they contained way, way too much fluff. Fluff is distracting, and a good guide should have you playing the game more than looking at the guide.
Thankfully, this guide has very little fluff. It's still there, but it's trimmed.

Overall, I've found the guide to be extremely well organized thus far. I'm not done with the game, and I'm not done with the guide, but I feel I've used it well enough to give it a review and rating. It does very little to spoil events in the game. In the past, I would read guides that detailed occurrences in cut-scenes. Here, the guide simply reads "after the cut-scene, you get the next main quest...," then it will proceed to guide you in the next main quest.
One of the grips I've found so far is that side quests are given at the beginning of each "chapter." While I get why they did that, it would've been better to list them at the end of each chapter, as more of a summary of things to do by that point in the game. I just found out last night there is a ton of side quests I've missed because of this, and I've since bookmarked them as missions to do in the immediate future.
That said, it does tell you on which page exactly to find details to complete each side quest and shrine, which I love. Usually I can figure it out by the quick sentence or two it gives you at the beginning of each chapter, but if I'm particularly stuck at a shrine or whatnot I can read what page to find more helpful information. There's very little text necessary to read, which highlights my point above in how I feel a guide should have you read less of the book and play more of the game. It's a hefty guide, but know that it's a hefty game, so the writers decided to let you into the world more than into their guide.

As for ease of navigability, I never found myself too lost. It's very easy to follow with each task accompanied by a general picture. I do wish they can pinpoint locations better when they're not on a map, but they do their best by placing actual lines or circles in white to show exactly where you need to go in the picture. A portion of the map is given before each chapter, so you're never completely lost. Of course, a large, double-sided poster is included with the entire map, so you've got that as well.
The sides of all the pages have main sections and sub-sections in bold so that you always know which section of the book you're in. I oddly found that the walk-through didn't take up most of the book, as is usually the case. Instead, side quests and shrines took up the majority, which is great! Shows you how much there is to do in this wonderful game.
The only part I had to look up online, however, was horse taming. They don't tell you in the guide if you require certain stamina for different horses, which I ended up finding out you do.

That said, this book is essential. I got the hardcover version because of the beautiful artwork on the front and the fact that I'm a sucker for hardcover editions. This guide is written by Piggyback, who is one of my favorite publishers. While I always appreciated Prima's Zelda guides, Piggyback always does a much more tremendous work in my eyes, so I was super ecstatic when I found out they were doing the Breath of the Wild guide. I wish they would've kept the save cover format as Prima, though, and offered the Hylian crest on the front in a new single color. I know there's a very limited edition that does, but that was long gone before I had the chance to order it. A shame that version was done in a more limited number than in previous Prima editions.

Must have for Completionists!!
By Wil&Alison
This book is a MUST HAVE for completionist! The massive map included with the hard cover is approx 38x26 inches of Breath of the Wild glory. One side of the map shows major landmarks (shrines, towers, towns, and other places you'll go along the main quest's travels) the other side shows the location and puzzle type of ALL NINE HUNDRED Korok seeds! The book itself is 370 pages thick, showing off everything from a main quest walkthrough, to every shrine's puzzle and all of the side quests. It also has a super complete inventory list, including how to acquire each item, and what you need to upgrade them as well. About the only thing missing is a completed compendium, but figuring that out yourself is half the fun :)

Overall, best game guide I've read in a really long time. Some complained about the tiny grey font, but I didn't even notice it. There's so much information packed into 370 pages I love it just the way it is!

Keeping Bees with a Smile: A Vision and Practice of Natural Apiculture (Gardening with a Smile, Book 3), by Fedor Lazutin

You can keep bees, naturally! "Keeping Bees With a Smile is a valuable guide for independent-minded beekeepers who are seeking ways to keep bees without treating them with chemicals, disrupting their homes, and otherwise intruding on their lives. Fedor Lazutin, one of Russia's foremost natural beekeepers, describes a beekeeping system based on a trust of a bee colony as a living being capable of solving life's challenges without human assistance. Beginner-friendly and complete with fascinating photographs, it is a special book, and one that I expect will 'shake up' the thinking of the independent-minded beekeepers in North America and Europe." - Thomas D. Seeley, Cornell University, author of Honeybee Democracy. Are you just curious about bees, or a practicing beekeeper looking for natural alternatives that work? This book is for you! Fedor Lazutin's approach is fun, healthful, rewarding, and accessible to all. Discover his unique insights on how to: * Keep bees naturally without interfering in their lives. * Start an apiary for free by attracting local bee swarms. * Build maintenance-free hives that mimic how bees live in nature. * Keep colonies healthy and strong without any drugs or gimmickry. * Help bees overwinter successfully even in the harshest climate. * Enhance local nectar plant resources. * Produce truly natural honey without robbing the bees. * Reverse the global bee decline... right in your backyard! An invaluable resource for beginners and professionals alike, this richly illustrated book is complete with plans for making bee-friendly, well-insulated horizontal hives with extra-deep frames - plus other fascinating advice you won't find anywhere else. You will gain a profound respect for the bees' intelligence, the practical information for successfully starting and maintaining a few (or many!) colonies in your own backyard, and an appreciation of the bees' harmonious cooperative ways - which may be key to creating a brighter future for our planet.

Natural beekeeping for all
By Dr. Leonid Sharashkin
Keeping bees can be simpler than growing potatoes - but immeasurably more rewarding! Thanks to this book, I now know it firsthand. While the media are awash with the news of bees disappearing on a global scale, the author's bees are healthy and happy, and the number of his hives naturally DOUBLES every year. He uses no medicines or any unnatural methods, inspects his hives ONCE PER YEAR, and harvests more honey than he can sell! This sounded so incredible I even went to Russia to see it all with my own eyes. And sure enough, it works (the author now has hundreds of hives)!

"Keeping Bees With A Smile" really offers an in-depth understanding of the workings of the bee colony, and shows a truly natural way of beekeeping that is also hands-off and fun. Following the detailed and straightforward advice from this book, I built ten simple swarm traps (plans were included) and caught four swarms in the first six weeks! I then transferred these free bees to the special, well-insulated horizontal hives with 18"-deep frames (all plans included, too - the hives were easy and almost free to build). And that's it! You don't need to inspect the bees, treat them or smoke them, no requeening, no heavy lifting, no queen excluders, no hauling hives around, no stings - i.e., none of the hassles and expenses commonly associated with keeping bees. You leave bees alone and they are happy and productive. I'm using some beekeeping jargon here, but the whole approach is much simpler than this review. My 4-year-old son can manage these hives, and I'm not exaggerating!

The book is thorough (402 pages!), sumptuously illustrated, beginner-friendly yet covers so many subjects that are hard to find in other sources - e.g., effective colony propagation via swarming (creating, collecting, and installing your own swarms instead of making splits or buying bee packages); how to avoid any unwanted swarming without intruding into the brood nest; construction of well-insulated horizontal hives with extra-deep (18" deep) frames and why these are important; successful bee wintering even in the harshest of climates; natural alternatives to requeening; enhancing local bee genetics; completely natural approach with zero medicines and no sugar feeding; clear diagrams of all frame manipulations; and much more. The author's approach is so... approachable and gentle on the bees that I feel it will take natural beekeeping to new heights. And it's not just my opinion - the book has received high acclaim from such luminaries as Dr. Thomas D. Seeley of Cornell University (author of "Honeybee Democracy" and "The Wisdom of the Hive").

Finally, I should add that this book (and my resulting initial forays into beekeeping) has deeply influenced my entire world outlook, for which I am thankful. Just observing tens of thousands of bees work harmoniously together while transforming the surrounding terrain into blossoming landscapes has given me renewed hope for humanity. And yes, I now get to climb trees (to put up and take down swarm traps) and puff dandelions (to propagate nectar plants) - things we love as children but forget when we become the "serious adults". Truly "Keeping Bees WITH A SMILE" at its best!

Eye-opening look at keeping bees
By Jim B.
In my three years of keeping honeybees, I have read quite a few excellent books answering the many questions I have about them. When I saw this book on Amazon I almost didn't bother looking at it because of the somewhat hokey title. But thank goodness I did!

Mr. Lazutin has done an outstanding job in explaining why he believes natural beekeeping makes the most sense and how to go about accomplishing it. He thoroughly describes the important aspects of a honeybee colony, both in the wild and in "captivity". He goes over the history of man-made hives and the pros and cons of each. I had wanted to try one of the European/Russian style extra-depth hives ever since finding out how long the comb was in nature (say in a hollow tree) and in an old house where I found a honeybee colony with three foot honeycombs!

With the detailed plans he provides in his book, I was able to build my first insulated, extra depth hive and can't say enough about how much I enjoy working my bees in it. As a matter of fact I am starting my second one soon. His design is a one box hive instead of the stacked boxes of the commercial Langstroth type. It is similar to a topbar hive, but with many improvements in my opinion. It is also much easier on my aging back!

If you are a hobbyist beekeeper and are interested in raising your bees as stress-free and "natural" as possible, you will want to give this a try. The biggest drawback I see to this hive is the frames are too big to go in the extractors available commercially, but you can crush and strain as many treatment free beekeepers prefer to do. I personally find the advantages far outweigh the the few drawback.

Even if you don't build one of these hives or even raise bees, this book is a wonderful read and will give you a new appreciation for honeybees and their fascinating lives.

A Wealth of Practical and Applicable Information
By Armin E. Schmidt
In full disclosure here;
I keep bees in Langstroths, Warres and Top Bars, have for years. I also collect books and dvd's on bees and beekeeping. I must admit I am a bit of a bee book hoarder. That being said, regardless of your style of beekeeping, this is a must read. Mr. Lazutin's writing style is unique in that he is able to discuss very scientific matters in an enjoyable and understandable manner. This book has an incredible amount of what, when and why needs of a colony in a hive and what the keeper can do to assure those conditions are met. Chapter IV, "How Bee Colonies Winter, and How to Make Wintering as Successful as Possible" alone is worth the price of the book. No matter what you keep your bees in or how you manage them, I can assure you, reading this book, will help you keep your bees alive.
