About the Author
Garth S. Jowett is a professor of communications at the University of Houston. He obtained his PhD in history and communication from the University of Pennsylvania. He has served as the director for social research for the Canadian government's department of communication and has been a consultant to various international communication agencies. He has been widely published in the area of popular culture and the history of communication. His book, Film: The Democratic Art (1976), was a benchmark in film history. His other publications include, Movies as Mass Communication, Children and the Movies: Media Influence and the Payne Fund Studies, and Readings in Propaganda and Persuasion, co-edited with Victoria O'Donnell. He is on the boards of several communication and film journals.

Silverman is something of a polymath, with wide-ranging interests, and he succeeds in bringing together concepts from different fields of study in unexpected but very fruitful ways. He surely must be a wonderful classroom teacher; his enthusiasm for his subject matter is contagious, and to say that his use of language in his writing is masterful is an understatement. …he is always engaging, and never dry. Throughout, his descriptions are a model of clarity, and the precision of his vocabulary in the simplest nontechnical sentences is awe-inspiring in its elegance. Silverman, whose extensive experimental and theoretical work has helped elucidate these processes, presents a clear and engaging discussion of the role of quantum superposition in diverse quantum phenomena such as the wavelike nature of particle propagation, indistinguishability of identical particles, nonlocal interactions of correlated particles, topological effects of magnetic fields, and chiral asymmetry in nature. He also examines how macroscopic quantum coherence may be able to extricate physics from its most challenging quandary, the collapse of a massive degenerate star to a singularity in space in which the laws of physics break down.

About the Author

Mark P. Silverman is Professor of Physics at Trinity College. After earning a Ph.D. in Physics from Harvard University, he has pursued a wide range of research interests concerning the structure of matter, the properties of light, and the dynamics of stars and galaxies. He has held the Joliot Chair of Physics at the Ecole Sup�rieure de Physique et Chimie Industrielles in Paris, was Erskine Professor at the University of Canterbury in Christchurch, and Chief Researcher at the Hitachi Advanced Research Laboratory (then) near Tokyo. Besides numerous articles on physics, Dr. Silverman has written of his educational experiments in "self-directed learning". For relaxation, he enjoys playing the flute and hiking in the mountains.

Maud Karpeles (1885 - 1976) was a folk music collector and scholar. She worked closely with Cecil Sharp for many years becoming his literary executor on his death. In addition to writing the definitive biography of Cecil Sharp, she edited the 1965 edition of Sharp's own 'English Folk Song: Some Conclusions' and wrote 'An Introduction to English Folk song'.

Lessons In Industrial Safety From Around The World

People who know me well know I am a voracious reader; they also know that I have a passion for the safety field. When people ask me who my favorite author is I give them an answer none are expecting: Trevor Kletz. Dr. Kletz is perhaps the world's preeminent expert on industrial safety, particularly in the chemical processing industry. "Learning From Accidents in Industry" is another of his golden books, emphasizing both the big picture (e.g. "what you don't have, can't leak,") and attention to detail in design and operation (e.g. "slip-plate on reflux drum.") As a former production manager at a chemical production plant, I can personally attest that the commonsense approach Dr. Kletz espouses is both vital and less common than it should be.

The beauty of this book (and others by Kletz) is his brilliant use of case studies to illustrate his chief points, frequently including photographs of accidents resulting from bad practice. I particularly like the focus on inherently safer design (and especially the emphasis on reduction in inventory of hazardous intermediary reagents) as opposed to added on safety features such as relief valves and catchpots. Of course both are sometimes required even in elegant designs, but Kletz emphasizes good plant layout and process design via the safest pathways. Another thing I love about this book is the incorporation of both well-known accidents (e.g. Flixborough, Seveso, Bhopal,) as well as accidents generally unknown outside of the organization in which it occurred (e.g. an explosion in a control room in a plant that manufactured organic solvent.) Kletz rightly focuses on sharing information within industry so others can learn from smaller incidents before a major accident occurs. Aviation is an excellent example of an industry in which this sharing of safety data occurs, but Kletz points to legal ramifications which overshadow this information exchange in most industries.

In addition to his discussion of the varying legal frameworks in different countries (the US and UK are compared and contrasted in particular) Kletz discusses varying regulatory approaches used around the world. I am extremely familiar with the stifling bureaucracy of US safety and regulatory codes, and Kletz summarizes the biggest problem with the US approach in the most succinct manner possible: "In some countries, including the US, it seems to be believed that industrial accidents can be prevented by the government writing a book of regulations that looks like a telephone directory, though it is rather less interesting to read." Bravo!

If you are interested in industrial safety, I cannot recommend a better authority or more compelling author than Trevor Kletz., and I recommend this book to safety professionals in any field.

School consolidations robbed towns of their souls, supermarkets eliminated the need for corner grocery stores, and the closings of mills and factories brought an end to small towns as we knew them. The generation whose story is told in this book grew up in the last small town in America.

Bob Barnett is a lifelong resident of West Virginia. I'll begin with a disclaimer--I know the author. That out of the way, anybody who grew up from the late 40s to mid-60s will recognize, laugh at, and weep about these snapshots of a lost way of life. Barnett is not simply nostalgic; he is undertstanding and articulate about why things changed. He is also generous about all the people in his small town who made it a great place to grow up. That is, this not a solipsistic account of what Barnett did, but a contextual recounting of how what he did fit into the rhythms of small town America. If you don't want to cry when he talks about getting on the wrong bus as a seven year old or want to cheer when he catches his first high school touchdown pass, you are a cold-hearted wretch beyond redemption.

What? no more small towns

The author, Bob Barnett did a nice job of sharing his stories, feelings and humor especially on teen dating and attending prom. I was curious to see how he validated "the last small town" and found his explanation solid. How nice it was to reminesce and laugh while reading this book.

I am proud to say that I grew up in Small Town America and am pleased and proud to see these stories of my home town area in print and selling so well. Thank you Bob Barnett for bringing Newel, Chester and all of the Northern Panhandle of Wonderful West Virginia into print so that others can know of the charm of living on the banks of the great Ohio River and being residents in an area of hard working , Christian, caring people!! Blessings to You !
My parents worked at Homer Laughlin Pottery, Hall China, Taylor ,Smith & Taylor and many more in the area. I have wonderful memories of my childhood in Chester and am glad these are being shared with people everywhere.

Useful overview of European romanticism

It's too easy in an English course to limit one's understanding of romanticism to the Anglo-American versions of it. This informative, interesting book provides essential background information as to the roots of romanticism which developed in Europe.

Certainly informative, but unnecessarily loquacious. One cannot help but wonder if Ferber could not have been equally as insightful with half as many words (especially for a book with the preface 'a very short introduction'). Not truly 'fun' to read, yet it delivers all it out promises.

Tali and Ophira Edut (The AstroTwins) began their astrological journey in 1992, when a computerized printout of their charts jolted them into a metaphysical awakening. Tali and Ophi did it!! Finally a guide to the guys of the galaxy has hit the sexy stratasphere. I found their book to be the smart savvy and sexy girls guide to their guys. An astrological template to help you not only figure out your guy but have fun with him as well. Being a professional coach and speaker, I'm VERY particular which relationship type books I read. Well this astrological guide is now one I recommend to all my relationship coaching clients, and they thank me. When I started recommending it, they all said, "Finally, a guy guide to the galaxy, I don't need to know anymore about my astrological sign, I want to know about his!!
