Kern Fellingham mistook Jemma for her sister an actress, Christine. Kern kidnaps Jemma and takes her to a tumbled down hut. For punishment he makes her clean up the hut.
Christine is having an affair with Kern's nephew. Christine is being evicted, and she would do almost anything to stay in the apartment, so Kern promises her a lease if she will go with him.
She goes and Kern soon learns she isn't a self centered selfish money hungry harpy.
He learns Christine is loving and kind, as well as beautiful..
Then he learns she is Jemma not Christine.
He loves her and he wants her to love him.

Stimulating, provocative look at Maoist revolutionary strategy through perspective of Chinese game wei-ch'i

Some writers have explored warfare and strategy from the perspective of modern game theory or analogies to chess. The author of this book explores Maoist revolutionary strategy by comparing it, by analogy, to strategy in the Chinese game of wei-ch'i (also known in Japan as Go).

The author starts with a chapter discussing the basic rules, structure and strategy of the Chinese game of wei-ch'i. In the second chapter, the author sets forth his arguments on how a formal analogy or model can be developed by comparing various facets of wei-ch'i to Chinese Communist insurgency. In the next three chapters, the author uses his formal analogy/model to discuss and examine the military and political strategy of the Chinese Communists during three periods of time: 1927 to 1937 (Kiangsi period); 1937 to 1945 (Sino-Japanese War); and 1945-1949 (Chinese Civil War). The author then presents a sixth chapter in which he provides a synopsis of the seventeen conclusions he has reached about the similarities between wei-ch'i strategy and Chinese Communist strategy during the period 1927-1949, and contends that his proposed analogy/model can be used to evaluate Chinese Communist geopolitical strategy and Chinese Communist-supported insurgency. Also, the author notes (in an appendix) that his proposed wei-ch'i analogy/model requires further research, and suggests several questions and topics that should be the subject of further research.

The book is thoughtful, scholarly, and interesting. It provides an unusual perspective on Maoist revolutionary warfare, and provides support for the author's contention that Western perspectives on strategy and warfare could benefit from consideration of alternative viewpoints such as historical Chinese strategic thought and the Chinese game of wei-ch'i (which is very different from chess). I strongly recommend this book for anyone interested in: (1) Maoist revolutionary warfare; (2) the military history of China during the period 1927-1949; (3) a different perspective on military strategy; (4) analogies between games and warfare; and (5) non-Western perspectives on warfare.

Wei-Ch'i and Chess - Eastern and Western strategic thought

As a former professional U.S. Army Military Intelligence officer, I found "The Protracted Game" to be an insightful and profound look at the differences between Western and Eastern stragetic thought. Chess is often used as a metaphor for Western diplomatic/military strategy, but chess focuses on the relative power of the pieces and their allowable moves. But in Wei Ch'i (or Go), all of the pieces (stones) have the same value and the emphasis is on strategic location and positioning pieces in spots on the board in order to capture territory. And "classic" Communist revolutionary strategy presupposes that the insurgent won't have the modern weaponry that Western military forces depend on. Thus the emphasis on capturing (and holding) territory a small piece at a time. I recommend this book to anyone who is interested in the development of strategic warfare and the difference between Eastern and Western strategic politico-military thought.

A Great Book

As a chess player and ADD computer programmer I was fascinated from reading the cover of this book. I have traveled in Asia but never able to put together how that thinking is pursued at a global level. This put it together for me. By digging into the the heart of the long term strategic mindset it opened up alot of ideas for me. Both in understanding Asia, and in my own life trying to figure out the value and difference between sharp, quick option based chess analysis and the longer term slow choke holds this book illuminates.

Highly recommended very few things you read challenge the kernel of how you think like this does.

But is there something more to human reaction to beauty than a conditioned response to social cues? Yes, says Harvard Medical School psychologist Nancy Etcoff. Survival of the Prettiest argues persuasively that looking good has survival value, and that sensitivity to beauty is a biological adaptation governed by brain circuits shaped by natural selection.

In riveting style, Etcoff, a psychologist at Harvard Medical School, demolishes the belief that beauty is a cultural construct, arguing instead "that beauty is a universal part of human experience, and that it provokes pleasure, rivets attention, and impels actions that help ensure the survival of our genes." By drawing widely from anthropological, psychological, biological and archeological literature, Etcoff discerns surprising similarities in the ways humans have perceived and responded to beauty across diverse cultures throughout the millennia. For example, cross-cultural research comparing two isolated Indian tribes in Venezuela and Paraguay to people in three Western cultures demonstrated a remarkable similarity in what is considered beautiful. Useful, interesting, and fun: worthy of my permanent collection

I love this book. I read it when it first came out as a library book, and it helped me with little beauty hacks that doubled my tips as a cocktail waitress. A great starter read for those who want to learn the system. ;)

Beyond that, it boasts some interesting studies and science-backed tricks, though it's NOT an instruction manual. Use it to guide your research further (disclaimer: I'm SUPER into biological anthropology. A very fun read that digests quickly.

I heartily recommend it to any woman (though men would benefit from reading it too).

Nancy Etcoff's "Survival of the Prettiest" argues that beauty is not a social construct but that human beings are hardwired to recognize people and things as beautiful. You could imagine it like this. There's a definite set of beauty principles we all carry around in our noggins that interact with the environment in all sorts of ways, and these principles allow for varying ranges as to what would appear to be beautiful to us. We might not be able to state in words why it is we find some people and some things beautiful. But there's compelling cross-cultural evidence that there are certain features that we all find beautiful.

Etcoff does make an effort to distinguish beauty from fashion. Fashion by its very nature is something that is of the moment. It sometimes either exploits some of the knowledge we carry around about what we find beautiful but other times is very much a matter of social construction. Sometimes we find certain styles and things fashionable because of some authority that tells us that that style of thing (clothing item, accessory, makeup, etc.) is fashionable.

Etcoff doesn't talk so much about art, but you could sort of apply this kind of thinking to art and the artworld. So nobody would definitely say that the function of art is that it ought to be beautiful, but everybody agrees that people in general like beautiful art. If so, then how to account for so much ugly art that people seem to like? Fashion and authority. Status indicators. Display of conspicuous consumption. It's not a pretty answer but very likely true. Or perhaps less cynically, sometimes it's just that a work of art can be ugly, maybe only a little ugly, but it serves another positive function: like maybe it expresses something important boy human nature.

Well written, enjoyable and well researched account of the science of beauty

Contrary to what many people think there are certain features of the human body and face that have always been considered attractive, in all cultures. That is, beauty is not an invention of the media any more than cuteness is an invention of Disney (Bambi, the movie, exploited our instinctive judgements of what is cute). Neither is beauty merely in the eye of the beholder. Yet, having said that, both the media and the perceiver matters, just not as much as people tend to think.

In this book Nancy Etcoff from Harvard University provides a fast paced, thoroughly researched, rich and enjoyable account of attractiveness. She provides answers to all the main questions that usually come up when attractiveness is discussed. Here is a non exhaustive list, which the basic answer

Q: What is attractive?
A: Averageness, symmetry, Big eyes (women), large cheekbones (men)

Q: When did people start to care so much about their appearance?
A: Since the dawn of time

Q: Are we nicer to more attractive individuals
A: Yes

Q: Why are certain traits considered attractive?
A: Because they are indicators of underlying qualities, such as health or fertility

These are rough answers, and there are many important and interesting details which cannot be covered in a short review such as this. Thankfully, Etcoff goes into full detail, and even though I am sort of a minor expert on attractiveness (have published a couple of studies on memory biases associated with attractiveness), I learned many things from this book. Etcoff’s style of writing is reminiscent of Steven Pinker. Both are masters when it comes to referencing a ton of literature from very divergent sources (books, TV-shows, published articles, archeological findings, poetry etc), in a short amount of text, without affecting the flow of that text. In fact Etcoff made such an impression on me that I am almost certain to buy her next book (if she writes one), independent of what that book is about.

Don't waste your money.

Complete waste of money. Do yourself a favor and buy the established texts on ethnobotany from reputable publishers. This author took only a page and a half to define the field when there have been entire texts devoted to the subject. I doubt the author has ever done any real ethnobotany fieldwork since such experience is not reflected in what was written. The text is an unsophisticated scattershot approach and includes plants from all over the world that have no connection to each other, with little or no cultural context included. For example, kava and peyote were on the same page, with only a paragraph each. The plants grow practically on opposite sides of the planet, in totally different environments, with totally different uses and cultural significance. Their uses and effects are not even remotely similar. No mention that Omer Stewart wrote the definitive text on the cultural significance of peyote. I'm very upset this thin manuscript of material that can be found in more detail on the internet set me back $90. I was expecting a text that could be used In the classroom, not something not much more advanced than a senior paper.

Ethnobotany: A modern perspective and must read

Ethnobotany: A Modern Perspective is a must read for those looking for a comprehensive, easy-to-use book on the subject. Divided into 11 chapters, with worksheets following each chapter, the reader is gradually introduced to complex relationships between cultures and the uses of plants. Ethnobotany requires a variety of different skills, such as botanical training for identification/preservation and anthropological training to understand the cultural concepts, but Dr. Rani Vajravelu breaks down these topics into organized, comprehensible sections.

This book is required for BOT 3800 (Ethnobotany) at the University of Central Florida, a class I took in the Spring of 2009. I relied heavily on the book for class and tests. It is a book you will need and read, cover to cover. I found the subject (and book) interesting and focused toward the college student. The author knows her audience, and entertains accordingly. Enjoy!
