About the Author
Dan Smith took up the post of Secretary General of International Alert in December 2003, coming from a distinguished research career that led to active involvement in peace processes. He was Director of the International Peace Research Institute, Oslo (PRIO) from 1993 to 2001 and led PRIO into active engagement in conflict resolution. He both established projects and worked directly on negotiation and dialogue in a number of areas including the Balkans and the Eastern Mediterranean. Before PRIO, he was Associate Director of the Transnational Institute (Amsterdam) 1988-1991 and Director 1991-1993, He has also held research positions at the Richardson Institute for Peace & Conflict Research; at Birkbeck College, London; at the Norwegian Nobel Institute; and at the Hellenic Foundation for Foreign & European Policy in Athens. Dan was Chair of the Board at the London-based Institute for War & Peace Reporting from 1992 to 2006 and is today a member of the UN Peace building Fund's Advisory Board. Dan is the author/co-author of 10 books including successive editions The State of the World Atlas and The Atlas of War and Peace, as well as over 100 journal articles and chapters in anthologies. His most recent major work is The State of the Middle East, published in October 2006.

Amazingly effective!

This book isn’t just about the WODs. The author focus on what Cross Training is, workout frequency, implementing a weekly or monthly training plan, and the often overlooked warm ups (Preparations) and cool downs. This book will not only introduce you to this amazingly effective and often transformative sport, but it offers you 100 sample workouts to choose from.

Really Helpful in Staying Healthy!

Great book but I personally think that men should read this more likely than women.The book was very organized and has different sections for whatever part that you want to work out. I do a lot of cardio but now I'm losing weight so I need to start toning. I've heard of some of these exercise, but it's nice to get a reminder of what I need to be doing.Honestly,I purchase this book for my husband but after I checked on the exercise instruction,I become interested.So now me and my hubby are doing 1 hour cross training ones a week.

Radford Castro is a writer from Vallejo, California. For more than two decades, he has followed the gaming industry and participated in video game tournaments. He has also written short stories about video games for several popular gaming sites and message boards.

I had just finished kindergarten when I first saw the Atari 800. I was walking with my dad and my uncle Aladdin at the Military Base Exchange Store (in Alameda, California) and saw it in the electronics section. It actually had a computer keyboard. Apparently there was a system before the Atari 800, but whatever that was, I didn't want it.

Kids needed to have the latest thing in the TV commercials. I was one of them. I tugged my dad by his pants. Looking up at him, I begged him to buy it for me. My uncle giggled and told me to wait for a bit. My uncle kept telling me that something better would debut soon. My dad was a little upset, since he'd just bought me an electronic organ to play music on. He then proceeded toward another part of the store, but for some reason I was still captivated by the Atari 800's beveled computer buttons. I wanted to press some of those buttons so bad, just to see what it felt like. My dad then came around the corner of the store and told me that the system was too expensive. I told him that I wanted it or else. Being the little brat I was, I grabbed a plastic lightsaber sitting near the electronics section and pointed it toward my dad's stomach. I then muttered that if he didn't buy me the system, he would turn into Darth Vader. I had no idea who the hell Darth Vader was at the time, since my dad never got a chance to take me to the movies, but all of my friends told me that Darth Vader was bad. Since then I had thought all "bad" people were Darth Vader.

When we left the store, my uncle and dad noticed how I kept looking at the Atari 800 with my nose pressed against the store window. My dad and uncle would always team up against me and tell me to wait. I would then go into the common routine most children demonstrate when leaving their favorite store. For a few minutes, I would place myself in depression and pout in front of my dad because I hadn't got my latest toy. Five minutes later my mom would bake cookies, and all would be forgotten. My mom also repeated what my dad and uncle kept telling me during my frequent trips to the stores. She told me just to wait or else she wouldn't make cookies for me. This was just too much pressure for me.

My grandma was also living with us at the time, and I wanted someone to side with me in getting the Atari 800. My grandma asked me what it was. I told her it was the greatest thing ever created. She then told me that the name Atari 800 sounded like the name of an evil prophet, and that it might not be a good idea to get this Atari since she didn't know what it would do to the family. I felt that my chances for getting this system were pretty much screwed.

Entertaining Read that Brought Back Some Good Videogaming Memories

The author, Radford Castro, was a friend of mine in high school, so I have to admit my review might be a little biased. The first half of the book is all about his videogaming experiences in the eighties and nineties, all of which were entertaining. I could easily relate to his experiences and even shared in some of them directly, and it brought back many good memories. I think anyone who grew up playing videogames throughout the eighties and nineties would be able to relate and be kept entertained with the stories. The second part of the book is all about videogame emulation and is a lot more technical. I found this part interesting as well, but those who don't have an existing technical knowledge of videogames may have a harder time following it. Still, I think it gives a good understanding of videogame emulation for those who are interested and would be worth reading..

If anything, the author presents an entertaining and comedic take on his experiences with video gaming. Of particular amusement to me is his hilarious take on his early video gaming years. As a young video game player in the early eighties and nineties, I can easily relate to the author's stories of fighting over quarters pizza parlors, the excitement of opening the box of the latest game systems, and challenging the "Street Fighter" masters at the local arcades. The book also includes a pretty comprehensive section on emulation, and the quizzes scattered throughout the book will pick your video game brain. If you're looking for a candid look at a true gamer's experience and want a time capsule of what's gone on in the video game market over the last 2 decades, this book may be for you.

This 1st time author is a decent writer but can really

get crazy sometimes. I'm a pretty big gamer so I share some of the experiences the writer has. Some of the stories can really get outrageous sometimes but they're really funny. If you're not a gamer, avoid this book. About half of the book may not make any sense to you since the writer assumes alot of things from the reader. I really dig his quiz though. It brought me back to memory lane.

One of the best books on teens

Karen Sternheimer has followed up her excellent "It's Not the Media" with another highly readable, incisive work that demolishes the rampant myths about teens today. In a time of terrible, misleading, distortion-packed anti-youth books flooding bookshelves, Sternheimer consistently uses logical analysis and vivid examples that treat teenagers not as some alien scourge, but with the respect and fairness that we would expect for our own adult groups in society. As a former teacher, I recommend this book not just for good reading and information, but as a scholarly text in courses on youth, sociology, psychology, media analysis, critical thinking, and related fields.

The Rocker Who Ditches Me

While I’m a big fan of Terri Anne Browning and her Rocker series, I’m not a big fan of Second Chance Decades Later romance. So, the 3 star rating has more to do with my personal tastes as a reader than anything else.
This book was well-written and anyone who likes very emotional second chance romance will love this book, so I recommend it for those readers.

In this book, the separation of the hero and heroine lasted 17 years and it felt really unnecessary. I realize that the timeline had to work out that way for Zander to get his own book and it to be with a heroine who was his first love.
And in all the flashbacks showing them as teenagers together, they were really sweet. I felt their love for each other.

SPOILER ALERT!!!

Then Zander just sort of decided he wasn’t good enough for her and gave up on their love. He did it coldly while feeling sorry for himself more than he felt sorry for her.

Years pass and they actually both are involved in the music world. In fact, she does PR for her famous country musician brother and other musicians. So for a lot of years she could have gotten a hold of him and her big excuse for not doing so was kind of lame.
Don’t misunderstand me with this review. I love this author and her books, but I really wasn’t buying all the excuses Zander and Annabelle had for the 17 years apart.

As for their reconciliation, I think it was too easy. 17 years of hurt built up would be something volatile in the heroine. She loved him that entire time and was all alone except for a few family members.
My only excuse for Zander was that they were young and hadn’t been an official couple for very long when he left her in the dust.
However, he also kind of said that at the time he was choosing between her and his rock star career. And the music, fame and fortune won.

Is this the last Rocker series book? I’m not sure. There’s a gigantic cast of characters at this point and I’m thinking there might be one or two stray single people left. If so, I look forward to the next book, but I also read Browning’s other series, so I’ll read a new book from any of those series, too.

For those who have read the series and had any questions about Zander this book will answer all of them. It starts out picking up where book 10 left off while you don't have to read the books before to under the story of Annabelle and Zander there is a lot of secondary characters that have already had there story told. The author takes you back to the beginning of of our couple when Anna was 16 almost 17 and Z was almost 19. Anna''s brother is the singer for OtherWorld and Zander plays bass. It's young love at its finest and the author takes the time to give you the full backstory. Fastfoward 17 years and they meet again. Zander has a lot to apologize for and Anna has a lot to forgive. I don't want to give anything away but make sure tissues are handy. If you want a love story spanning 17 years full of young love and heartbreaking sadness this book is for you.

Normally TAB is a 5star read for me.... but i couldn't give 5stars to this book. The whole reason he left her, to me, was the stupidest thing ever. Once i learned of his reasons i found myself skipping. once i got over that huge time gap, the daughter he never knew, etc, i did enjoy the book. Maybe it's just me, but I'm sort of glad the series is almost over, love it i do, but i think it's time.

Sets the stage for all information architects

This book will teach you some basics on how to most effectively present quantitative information using various sorts of graphs and charts. Afterwards you will know how and why you should get rid of chart junk (gridlines, tick marks, ornaments, etc.) or alternatively using some of the examples on bad design presented, you will see how to manipulate your audience using the "Lie Factor". Actually the advice given in this book could easily fit within just one piece of paper, but then: This book is simply beautiful. It is state of the art for printed books, you almost feel a passion for it. Mr. Tufte takes his own medicine: No words in this book are superfluous. Illustrations and examples are carefully selected and reprinted with the utmost care. It takes no more than some hours to read the book, but afterwards you can use more than just a few hours to study the examples of timeless graphic displays. The only reason why this book is short of five stars is the following: Mr. Tufte uses quite some space providing statistics about charts found in different publications (chart junk percentages, lie factor. Personally I find this information fairly irrelevant and would have preferred more examples of chart remakes. However this book is definately still a MUST have!

Interesting, but sometimes strange

It goes without saying that this one of the books you "must read" if you have anything to do with charts and graphs.

The book is wonderful as a selective romp through a history of graphics, and is correct in constantly hammering home the point that clarity in graphics is key, and that the ratio of data-ink to non-data-ink should be high (an interesting measure).

But significant parts of the book simply come across as eccentric, at best.

Tufte advocates data on a world map that nearly stretches around the world twice (p99) -- a little overlap is useful, but this goes far overboard.

He makes truly bizarre suggestions on using barely-visible line "offsets" and barely visible line-gaps to express quartile data (p124). I can barely make out the key information on his perfectly printed page, and can guarantee that any reproduction either by overhead projector or by Xerox would render his "preferred form" utterly useless. This section alone makes me question his judgment throughout the rest of the book.

And then his section on sparklines (pp 172-174) seems to be a jarring bit of self-promotion. He extolls their virtues, but I don't recall ever coming across them in print or on the web -- they just don't seem useful enough to warrant three enthusiastic pages in this book.

In sum, I'd say the main value in this book is as a beautiful compendium of varied graphical examples throughout history. In contrast, Tufte's analysis and recommendations seem overly wordy and at times misguided. I was honestly surprised -- from such a famous book, I was truly expecting more.

Data decorators, data-ink, instant chartjunk, and naked women

Perhaps the single most accessible book on data visualizations. You are given a tour of the history of visualizations, the seminal contributions of people such as Playfair, Tukey, and others, a rogues' gallery of sorts of awful visualizations, a peek into small-multiples visualizations, and an exposition of the principles of good graphic design and visualizations. A must-have book for anyone interested in good data visualizations.

Tufte's contention is that a lack of adequate knowledge and expertise and a mistaken notion about numbers are to blame for bad visualizations. The principles of good visualizations, on the other hand, are few and simple. The book is all about exposing bad examples and enunciating these good principles, beautifully illustrated with examples, and printed on excellent quality paper.

The principles should not be applied rigidly or in a peevish spirit... and it is better to violate any principle than to place graceless or inelegant marks on paper. Most principles of design should be greeted with some skepticism." [page 191]

While seemingly a trivial matter, the issue of the size of charts, whether they should be tall or horizontal, Tufte states that "Graphics should tend toward the horizontal, greater in length than height..." and "Many graphics plot, in essence (cause and effect) and a longer horizontal helps to elaborate the workings of the causal variable in more detail." [pages 186, 187]

Time-series displays are at their best for big data sets with real variability. [page 30]

Chapter 2, "Graphical Identity" Is a stunning collection of graphs that distort, lie, deceive, and exhibit all manners of skills other than those required for data visualizations.
"Much of twentieth-century thinking about statistical graphics has been preoccupied with the question of how some amateurish chart might fool the naive viewer. ... At the core of the preoccupation with deceptive graphics was the assumption that data graphics were mainly devices for showing the obvious to the ignorant. ... The assumption led down two fruitless paths in the graphically barren years from 1930 to 1970: First, that graphics had to be "alive", "communicatively dynamic," overdecorated and exaggerated.. Second, that the main task of graphical analysis was to detect and denounce deception." [page 53]

"A graphic does not distort if the visual representation of the data is consistent with the numerical representation." [page 55]
Which leads to his definition of the term, "Lie Factor", which he defines as the "size of the effect shown in graphic" divided by "size of effect in chart".

"Another way to confuse data variation with design variation is to use areas to show one-dimensional data" [page 69]
An example cited is the depiction of "the rate of inflation", for which, "graphs show currency shrinking on two dimensions, even though the value of money is one-dimensional." [page 70]

A very important observation quoted in Chapter 3 comes from Howard Weiner - "Perhaps the reason is an increase in the perceived need for graphs ... without a concomitant increase in training in their construction." [page 79]
Tufte elaborates: "Nearly all those who produce graphics for mass publication are trained exclusively in the fine arts and have had little experience with the analysis of data. ..." "... many graphic artists believe that statistics are boring and tedious. It then follows that decorated graphics must pep up, animate, and all too often exaggerate what evidence there is in the data." [page 79]
And "The doctrine of boring data serves political ends, helping to advance certain interests over others in bureaucratic struggles for control of a publication's resources. ... as the art bureaucracy grows, style replaces content. And the word people, having lost space in the publication to data decorators, console themselves... " [page 80]

Tufte defines "data-ink" in Ch 4 ("Theory of Data Graphics") as "the non-erasable core of a graphic, the non-redundant ink arranged in response to variations in the numbers represented
Data-ink ration = data-ink / total ink used to print the graphic" [page 93]
So, it should not come as a surprise, when Tufte takes a single bar with a value label at the top of the bar, and states that "the labeled, shaded bar of the bar chart, for example, unambiguously locates the altitude in size separate ways." [page 96].

Chapter 5 - "Charkjunk: Vibrations, Grids, and Ducks" is perhaps the most humorous chapter, as the title itself suggests. A quote from Johnathan Swift, indicting 17th-century cartographers, says it all - "With save pictures fill their gaps, And o'er unhabitable downs, Place elephants for want of towns." [page ] ouch!

"This may well be the worst graphic ever to find its way into print:" [page 118] refers to a "series of weird three-dimensional displays appearing in the magazine American Education in the 1970s (that) delighted connoisseurs of the graphically preposterous. Here five colors report, almost by happenstance, only five pieces of data..." [page 118]

You may not, and I certainly did not agree with Tufte's suggestions for maximizing the data-ink efficiency of the box-plot, in the chapter on "Data-ink Maximization", but they are worth examining nonetheless. However, his redesign of the bar chart, with a border and other accouterments, on pages 126-128, are excellent.

Many examples of bad visualizations cited in the book are from the "New York Times", so it is sort of reassuring when you see that the quality of visualizations on the NYT has improved a lot, and are frequently the objects of animated discussions. There may be hope, after all.

Tufte writes that an art director with overall responsibility for the design of over 3,000 graphics annually had this to say - "graphics are intended to more to lure the reader's attention away from the advertising than to explain the news in any detail. 'Unlike the advertisements,' he said, 'at least we don't put naked women in our graphics.' " [page 80] We must be all thankful for small mercies, I suppose.

I bought quite a few books to study for the MCAT. The only one that I can say absolutely made a huge difference for me was the MCAT Prep Course Book. I did awful (like, embarrassingly awful!) in both semesters of physics in college and essentially had to start from scratch when preparing for the MCAT. I wish I would have had this book when I was taking physics! It was like 'Hallelujah!", I finally understand. Each chapter effectively and concisely explains the concepts, gives good examples, and is never tedious to read. --A Student

I am a Pre-Med student and I recently purchased this book. I had a lot of trouble with my undergrad Chem classes which I took about 4 years ago. This book greatly supplemented my knowledge and understanding of Organic and General Chemistry. In my opinion, this book is a great review for MCAT chem and orgo. --A Student

This book covers all the basics of biology. For someone like me, who had a lacking undergrad bio course, this book helps. The diagrams throughout the book are very helpful because they give you another way of remembering the concepts. All in all, this is great for reviewing bio. I have not yet looked at the verbal section, but it looks promising. --A Student

Not terrible, but not Island of the Blue Dolphins

Sequels are almost always a let-down. I loved IotBD in grade school, and was thrilled to discover the sequel -- twenty-five years later, while in the library with kids of my own. I took it home and devoured it, but was left dissatisfied.

Not only does Zia's story pale in comparison to Karana's heroic survival, but several moments left me frowning with annoyance.

First of all, the plot inconsistencies drove me mad. Midway through the book, we are given to believe that all the young people at the mission have run away, leaving only Karana and some old Indians behind. (This is crucial to the plot, as she alone is blamed by the cruel captain as a suspected accomplice of the runaways.) But then we learn, out of the blue, that her brother has also remained behind -- but we're never told why. Later, when Karana comes to the mission and is given a bed in the girls' sleeping quarters, I thought this room would now be desolate -- but O'Dell tells us it's still crowded. With whom?

Sadly too, the character of Karana takes a beating in this book. In IotBD, she was a hero, larger than life. But seen through Zia's eyes, she is a mute and pitiable recluse lost in a foreign world, who takes childish delight in melons. This might be realistic, but it's a pathetic turn of events that I would rather not have read.

There is also a tragic irony that runs through the plot, to wit: Karana left her island to seek companionship at long last. But in the sequel, we learn that she ends up withdrawing to an isolated cave where she recreates a tinier, sadder version of her free life on the island, before finally dying of a broken heart. Zia, meanwhile, originally left her home village for the regimented life of the Mission solely in the hope of finding Karana -- but in the end, what she learns from Karana is that she'd be better off back home.

In other words, both characters would have been better off if Zia had never heard of Karana and Karana had died on her island. And I think I would have been better off had I not stumbled across this book.

Whatever Happened to Karana?

Zia is the continuation of the Island of the Blue Dolphins, or what happened to Karana after she left the island.

Zia is a young girl whose mother was the sister of Karana. Zia had learned of Karana before her mother passed away and now Zia wants to rescue Karana from the island. That she tries with her brother, Mundo with a small boat they found washed up. They get caught by whalers and escape.

During this time, the Indians live at the Mission where they have to work hard just to be able to eat and sleep, and also learn the religion of the priests there. There is a lot of unrest and many run away.

Finally when Karana makes it back to the mainland, she cannot get used to the way people live--she has always lived her way with her dog and no one understands that. What was suppose to be a happy reunion between Zia and Karana ends up a sad tale. In the end, Zia finally figures out what life could be like and leaves.

The story is written well and there is truth in it just as there was in the Island of the Blue Dolphins. The tale does drag in places and in others, there is lots of action. But you do learn how the Indians were treated by the Mission people and why they ran. So there is some teaching here.

This book is the sequel to Island of the Blue Dolphins. Zia, the nice of Karana, wants to find her aunt. She tries many possible ways to get to the island that her aunt is supposable on. Many other people came in to help her. Do you think they will ever find Karana?
Zia and, her brother, Mando are the main characters. Mando would be tribally annoying at times. For example, he had to go just about everywhere with Zia. It seemed as if he would never go away. Also, if you did not let him do what he wanted he would cry or make Zia feel like she has to go out of her way to make him happy. Threw out the book you would find Spanish words like; Mira, they would not tell you most of the meanings. That is what I did not like about the book. Mostly the book made it up with action that was taking place. The exciding parts don't last very long in the book. I think they should be longer. Most of the boring parts where long. There were some not very important things in the book but it as still good to read.
I would recommend this book to people who have already read Island of the Blue Dolphins. Also, I recommend this to people who like a great adventure. It is easy to read, but the Spanish words would be hard for people who don't know Spanish.
