Structure is the essential element of a successful story

This book is about the most overlooked aspect of the writer's craft - the fiction novel structure. Many newbie writers, and I was one of them, just start writing stories without realising how easy it is to fall into multiple traps that would ruin their books. Some of us have an excellent inbuilt sense of the structure, others, like me, not so much, yet every writer needs to learn about the rules of storytelling at least to know why our stories are missing something or simply fail to appeal to the reader.
KM Weiland systematically goes through the macro- and micro-structure of the novel. First, she tells us meticulously about the architecture of the three-act plan stories and all the important elements of it, e.g. first plot point, inciting event, climax, resolution. Then, she writes about the structure and dynamics of the scene and the two types scenes and their variations. Finally, she discusses the micro-structure at the level of sentences and the common signs of the clunky prose.

I have started following Katie's blog for writers, Wordplay, years ago and I think I've learned from her most of the techniques described here before I even started reading the book.

"Structuring Your Novel" is a distilled and well-organised digest of dozens of Wordplay blogposts and KM Weiland is definitely the right person to give us her expert opinion. She is a successful historical/speculative fiction writer, so a lot of teaching comes from her own experience.
I congratulate the author with this new brilliant guide for writers, I'm sure it will help many of us become better writers.

A Must Read For Beginning Fiction Writers!

As a beginning fiction writer, I read lots of books on writing `how to's. Most of these books that I find most helpful cluster around topics related to plotting, character development, and story telling.

I soon learned that story structure and plot are tied together, so regardless of the genre you are writing in, making your plot work within your story structure is absolutely key to keeping your reader engaged and continuing to turn the pages of your story.

K.M. Weiland's new book, `Structuring Your Novel: Essential Keys for Writing an Outstanding Story` breaks new ground. This book bridges the gap between story structure for movies and structure that works for novels and short stories.

Ms. Weiland knows whereof she speaks; she is the author of three published novels as well as several short stories, as well as a previous non-fiction book, `Outlining Your Novel.` I purchased that book, and it led me to her very useful teaching web site, which I have been followig for some time.

In her new book, `Structuring Your Novel,` Ms. Weiland discusses the principles of structuring your story as a whole, but then in the second half of the book, she breaks new ground -- at least it was new to me-- by detailing out the structuring principles at the level of a story's individual scenes. It turns out there is quite a bit to know about how to structure and order scenes so as to be successful in getting your reader to continue turning the pages. Ms. Weiland gives a very complete treatment to this, and I haven't seen any other book that gives as much information on this topic as she does.

`Structuring Your Novel...' is chock full of concrete examples of the concepts the author presents. Each story or scene level structure concept is followed up with with four examples, two drawn from well known novels, and two from films, which make application of the concept easy to understand. And, the author is consistent in using this approach throughout the book. This consistency, and Ms. Weiland's diligence in finding good examples that well illustrate her points really do make this book very useful.

To sum up, a writer who understands story structure is far more likely to write reader engaging, page turning fiction than a writer who doesn't understand the importance of it. The value of a writing book is that it can help you be a better writer. `Structuring Your Novel...' is already helping me craft better stories.

“Structuring you Novel” by K. M. Weiland is well worth a gander. I am a big advocate of outlines. I am mystified by people who say “I can’t outline my characters don’t let me.” They are figments of your imagination you tell them what to do. However, even the most diehard organic writer would benefit with a clear and concise structural basis for their novels. What is a crisis? Where should the first plot point be? What is an inciting incident, and do I need one? Is there a difference between crisis and climax?
The three act structure has been around since the beginning of written history, and probably even during spoken history. Start with a bang, build up tension, and end with a satisfying conclusion that makes the audience want to go out and read you next book.
Reading this book on structure, if you are bound and determined to write organically, will not change your mind. But maybe, if you understand how the three act structure works, you will put these principles into play.
I found this book and the accompanying workbook to concisely explain the structure and how to apply it to your own work. If you are an organic writer, you will benefit from the suggestions as you look down that long hall of revision. If you are an outliner you will be able to intentionally put in the points as you need to in your outline to make your work more cohesive.
I give this work 5 stars because the world needs more practical books on structure and plotting and this will be the guidebook that you need.

A must addition to any designer's toolkit

As designers we know designing should be an iterative process and this book delves into teaching how to navigate this process by improving your communication skills. I specially liked the idea of keeping in mind the human side of the design practice: we are not only designing for human, we are also humans creating the designs. Therefore we need to truly connect with the people that will make possible those designs. This connection is what can enable us to work as a team and produce the best user experiences.

Plus the book is a joy to read as it combines great story telling and practical advice. Highly recommended!

Useful Information at any point of your careeer

Tom and O'Reilly have put together a great book. It's approachable and casual while maintaining an intelligent and authoritative air, which is exactly the kind of thing Tom is encouraging all designers (or anyone interacting with stakeholders really) to do.

ADD goes from personal anecdote, to practical advice, and back. This makes the reading interesting, the information helpful, and the ways to apply his experiences and subsequent take-aways to your own life/career a straightforward process. The information Tom provides in this book feels so obvious and intuitive. Yet while reading it, I found myself realising I was only practicing half or so of the techniques he suggests, despite years of experience working with a wide range of clients. The things I did already know and do mindfully, I found validating to see someone else express in a published book. A great way to shore up some confidence, and build upon that foundation.

Overall, this is a great book. It's easy to read. It's not about the nitty-gritty of technical design process. It's a higher-level book that discusses concepts and techniques that will help you be a better person and a better designer to work with. After all, no one works in a vacuum (except vacuum repairmen and astronauts).

I value this book like a Mormon boy values his scriptures. I keep two physical copies in the house and one next to the seat of my car. Of course, I also keep the digital version with me in my Kindle app and even purchased a PDF version from O'Reilly to use on my iPad Pro so I can write in the margins all of the inspirational thoughts induced by reading the book. I even make it a point to read every footnote, highlighting the ones that really stand out to me, for better understanding of the context. I find that when I don't read even just a couple of paragraphs of this book each day I fall into the temptations of not articulating my design decisions as well, or even at all. As an amateur designer turned developer, I feel like it has helped me to not only better communicate with stakeholders in projects in which I'm involved, but also has given me methods, vocabulary, and a better angle for speaking with designers.

I'd recommend it to every artist!

This is a fantastic book on perspective. It was recommended to me by an artist friend, and I in turn recommended it to a college art teacher I to help her with students who were having a hard time with the subject matter.

It goes over everything you could ever want to know about perspective in wonderful, glorious, humorously illustrated detail. The material is approachable, it doesn't seem daunting, academic, overly precise or mathematic. I'd recommend it to every artist, and I think every artist can learning something from it, not just those drawing comic books.

One of the Two Perspective Books You'd Need to Get It

In my opinion, the only perspective book (of the many I've looked through) that covers practically EVERYTHING is Vanishing Point by Jason Cheeseman-Meyer; that one goes into just about every possible variety, and really digs deeply into technique, but he glosses over things too quickly and moves on, and can leave you puzzled, not explaining WHY something should work, just believe it or leave it; I like Chelsea's book because he takes more time to explain things in a clear and understandable manner (tho he does spend way too much time on some of the very basic and obvious concepts; how hard is it to understand that objects get smaller in the distance?) but he doesn't go as far as Cheeseman-Meyer into such things as curvilinear.
I think the two books together could just about cover it for anyone really trying to learn and understand perspective. When you can't figure out what an author says, it helps to read another author's explanation of the same subject, and these two complement each other well.

Probably the best perspective book yet for any artist!

I am a professional artist with a fairly complete resume...and library! So I feel as though I can speak about this book with some amount of experience behind my words.
I actually happened on this book as I really don't draw comics at all (I paint with my own hand-ground paints using methodology based on Renaissance techniques). Since I teach classical art and hadn't had time to draw up worksheets as I usually do about perspective for my students, I was searching bookshelves for a good text book to hand them. That's when I found this book...and I'm so glad that I did. Even people who don't paint even seem to enjoy reading it! The book is very well written and entertaining...everyone will learn something from it whether you've worked at your art for a day, a year or a lifetime. It takes the intimidating factors away from the theories of perspective. Adults can easily read it and kids are drawn to it in a second...a sneaky way to learn "complex" theories by reading "the funny pages"!

About the Author

Miroslav Kubat, Associate Professor at the University of Miami, has been teaching and studying machine learning for more than a quarter century. Over the years, he has published more than 100 peer-reviewed papers, co-edited two books, served on the program committees of some 60 program conferences and workshops, and is the member of the editorial boards of three scientific journals. He is widely credited for having co-pioneered research in two major branches of the discipline: induction of time-varying concepts and learning from imbalanced training sets. Apart from that, he contributed to induction from multi-label examples, induction of hierarchically organized classes, genetic algorithms, initialization of neural networks, and other problems.

Loved the Book

Kubat approaches the field of machine learning in a very mathematical yet intuitive way. The book begins with a conceptual understanding of classification through the use of Johnny's pies and continues to step-by-step build upon this knowledge through each chapter. Although there are programming challenges at the end of most chapters, no actual code is used in this book. You must be able to properly program using a mathematical basis to utilize this book to its fullest potential. Kubat smoothly teaches Machine Learning in a comprehensive and conceptual way so that you really understand the field fundamentally.

If you are going to read one book on machine learning, read this one

This is a must read for anyone that wants to get into machine learning. It covers all the main algorithms and practical challenges of building complex models. For a very technical book it is a very easy read, and the questions are a great way to test the understanding of the material learned. The way the material is organized is very interesting too, addressing machine learning from the multiple angles I usually look at things in real life.

About the Author
Thomas Berger (1924–2014) was the bestselling author of novels, short stories, and plays, including the Old West classic Little Big Man (1964) and the Pulitzer Prize–nominated novel The Feud (1983). Berger was born in Cincinnati and served with a medical unit in World War II, an experience that provided the inspiration for his first novel, Crazy in Berlin (1958). Berger found widespread success with his third novel, Little Big Man, and maintained a steady output of critically acclaimed work since then. Several of his novels have been adapted into film, including a celebrated version of Little Big Man. His short fiction has appeared in Harper’s Magazine, Esquire, and Playboy. Mr. Berger's short fiction is a delight.

Mr. Berger's short fiction being collected for the first time (the 1984 Lord John Press limited edition of _Granted Wishes_ was not a collection) should be cause for celebration. Instead, this e-book has appeared without so much as a simper of appreciation. No surprise, I suppose, as Mr. Berger's work has never, outside of _Little Big Man_, attracted much attention or sold very well. Having read all 23 of Mr. Berger's novels, and been richly entertained by each of them, I've never understood the public's indifference to his writing. His stories, whether novel length, or as is the case here, in short form, are always amusing.

Mr. Berger is a master of language, and the stories chosen for this collection are uniformly excellent. Then there is the bonus material. What a pleasure it is to have some photographs other than those which have appeared on dust jackets over the last 55 years. Seeing Mr. Berger in the prime of life, clearly enjoying himself, was alone worth the price of the e-book.

A treat!

Having something new to read from Thomas Berger is always a treat, and this collection of short stories does not disappoint. The theme of abnormal occurrences is ripe for Thomas' uncanny ability to present characters who are either absurd themselves or faced with absurd situations. Even when writing about what appears to be a comically ridiculous situation, his characters display human actions and emotions that always ring true.

"Planet of the Losers," one of my two favorite stories in this collection, describes the interaction between a man and an alien. The exchange between the two, coupled with the backstory of the main character's own issues, is deeply engaging. Little elements like having the main character teach the very human looking alien that legs (which he has) can bend are truly funny in this author's talented hands.

"Granted Wishes" is classic Thomas Berger and calls to mind his great novels "Changing the Past" and "Being Invisible"; two of my all time favorite books. The story is dark though comic and ends with a true sucker punch that will undoubtedly surprise.

So why only four stars? While I thoroughly enjoyed the great majority of the stories in this collection, there is a group of stories under the heading "Tales of the Animal Crime Squad" that I simply did not enjoy and actually wound up skimming just so I could move on to a better selection.

This collection of short fiction from the genius (and ingenious)Thomas Berger does not disappoint. He never does. As a matter of fact, I'm still laughing at the outrageous comedy (as subtle as it is at times) and I'm still reeling from the powerful punches of psychological insight Berger delivers on nearly every page. Berger's use of language never fails to amaze me -- but don't mind me, I'd probably be mesmerized by reading his description of the ingredients in a jar of mayo, if he ever chose to write that. Do yourself a big favor you won't soon forget and read Abnormal Occurrences. You'll be writing a laudatory review soon after finishing the last page.
