Death Without Weeping: The Violence of Everyday Life in Brazil, by Nancy Scheper-Hughes

When lives are dominated by hunger, what becomes of love? When assaulted by daily acts of violence and untimely death, what happens to trust? Set in the lands of Northeast Brazil, this is an account of the everyday experience of scarcity, sickness and death that centres on the lives of the women and children of a hillside "favela". Bringing her readers to the impoverished slopes above the modern plantation town of Bom Jesus de Mata, where she has worked on and off for 25 years, Nancy Scheper-Hughes follows three generations of shantytown women as they struggle to survive through hard work, cunning and triage. It is a story of class relations told at the most basic level of bodies, emotions, desires and needs. Most disturbing - and controversial - is her finding that mother love, as conventionally understood, is something of a bourgeois myth, a luxury for those who can reasonably expect, as these women cannot, that their infants will live.

From Publishers Weekly
In Brazil's shantytowns, poverty has transformed the meaning of mother love. The routineness with which young children die, argues University of California anthropologist Scheper-Hughes, causes many women to affect indifference to their offspring, even to neglect those infants presumed to be doomed or "wanting to die." Maternal love is delayed and attenuated, with dire consequences for infant survival, according to the author's two decades of fieldwork. Scheper-Hughes also maintains that the Catholic Church contributes to the indifference toward children's deaths by teaching fatalistic resignation and upholding its strictures against birth control and abortion. This important, shocking study resonates with the emotion of Oscar Lewis's ethnographic classics as it follows three generations of women in a plantation town. The compelling narrative investigates the everyday tactics of survival that people use to stay alive in a culture of institutionalized dependency ravaged by sickness, scarcity, feudal working conditions and death-squad "disappearances."

From Library Journal
This book by an anthropology professor from Berkeley, formerly a Peace Corps volunteer in northeast Brazil, is simply breathtaking. Its controversial theme--that mother love as conventionally understood is a luxury for those who can reasonably expect, as poor women in Brazil cannot, that their infants will live--is, in the best sense, illuminated by deconstructionist and feminist thought. The author's understanding of these lives on the edge is at times sympathetic, passionate, and sophisticated. But what makes the book as exciting to read as a good novel is her long-term interaction with a group of people that she clearly loves and the complete lack of the sense of the "other" that is so often found in anthropological writing. This work should have as much influence on studies of the relationship of women and children as did Margaret Mead's Growing Up in Samoa (1936) on the shaping of adolescence or Oscar Lewis's The Children of Sanchez (1961) on the cultural effects of poverty. Highly recommended.

From Kirkus Reviews
A shattering portrayal of life among the impoverished inhabitants of Alto do Cruzeiro (``Hill of the Crucifixion''), a shantytown in the city of Bom Jesus da Mata in northeastern Brazil's Pernambuco Province. Scheper-Hughes (Anthropology/UC at Berkeley), whose 1979 Saints, Scholars, and Schizophrenics (not reviewed) won the Margaret Mead Award, has again produced a work of enormous power and importance. Alto do Cruzeiro is well named: Life in its fetid alleyways and smoke-filled mud-and-sheet-metal huts is a perpetual Golgotha where poverty, malnutrition, and terrorism make death and ``disappearances'' commonplace--and where, in 1987, the infant and child mortality rate reached more than 23 percent of total births. Scheper-Hughes, who first came to the area as a Peace Corps volunteer in the mid-1960's and who has returned again and again, focuses most of her attention on the women of the Alto. Bringing an unusual sensitivity to her research and couching her findings in prose that is at once subtle and precise, she urges ``a more `womanly' anthropology,'' one that engages ``questions of human relationships and ethics.'' The author explores the social, economic, political, and religious factors--the plantation system's exploitation of the workers; governmental corruption and indifference; superstition; the hidebound conservatism of the Roman Catholic hierarchy--that contribute to the inhumane conditions. In what is undoubtedly her most controversial conclusion, Scheper- Hughes contends that the uncertainty of existence within the ghetto community atrophies impoverished women's feelings of what is thought in more stable Western societies to be an inherent female trait--``mother love.'' The author makes a strong case for this finding, which undoubtedly will provoke heated discussion. A stimulating, consistently engrossing contribution to the scientific understanding of a complex and tragic situation. Not for the faint of heart
By Leonardo Alves
Scheper-Hughes's book is certainly the most impacting book I have read in months. I cannot call it entertaining but it is riveting in presenting a mind-boggling situation of abject poverty in Northeastern Brazil with its consequent infant and child mortality and impacts on the family structure.
Death Without Weeping is a very original, very relevant, and carefully written book although not perfect. The book is the result of extensive field research by Dr. Scheper-Hughes, Professor of Anthropology at the University of California at Berkeley but nevertheles very readable. I could understand and enjoy most of it without having had extensive training in Anthropology.
The author does a wonderful job in translating Alto do Cruzeiro reality into something the average American can understand. This "translation" certainly adds a bias but is still indispensable in my opinion. I consider that the author's religious beliefs strongly affected the outcome of the book and that I think could have been avoided.
I understand that the author has it's ethics and wouldn't reveal in the text the actual location name for Bom Jesus da Mata. I'm not tied by the same ethics so I can tell it: Bom Jesus da Mata is actually Timbauba, a 60,000 inhabitants town on the outskirts of Recife. The book subtitle, "The Violence of Everyday Life in Brazil" couldn't be worse. Timbauba is not Brazil. It has its own very specific problems and to read the book without understanding the great diversity among Brazil's regions would be very unfair to the country. Even in a local scale, Alto do Cruzeiro is not Timabuba and Timbauba is not Pernambuco. If you read the book don't rule out the possibility of going down to Brazil and having a wonderful time there. Tourism is a very good way of alleviating if not solving the problems presented in the book.
I have read now dozens of books written in English by the so-called Brazilianists who most of the times are not Brazilians themselves. Most of the books have the same problem of Death Without Weeping: there's a total sloppiness in spelling the Portuguese words. I can't believe UC Berkeley couldn't hire a Brazilian graduate student to proofread the originals. Moreover, the Geraldo Vandre quote on the very first page of the book, which gives the book its name was completely fabricated. Disparada is a great song and for writing songs such as "Disparada" and "Para Nao Dizer Que Nao Falei Das Flores", Geraldo Vandre was captured and tortured by the military dictatorship in Brazil. He was later released but severely braindamaged. However, the verses Scheper-Hughes quoted do not exist in "Disparada".
I was shocked to learn on the book's Epilogue who Seu Jacques, whom the book is dedicated to, was. But this suspense I'm not going to break.

Classic Modern Ethnography
By Sam Dennis
Scheper-Hughes not only crafts a thorough, complex ethnography, but she takes a risk by putting a piece of herself into it as well. Here is the introduction I wrote for a term paper about this book:

Anthropologist Nancy Scheper-Hughes covers rough territory in Death Without Weeping, an ethnography about sugar cane workers in Northeastern Brazil. In chapters eight and nine she discusses the concepts of maternity and infanticide in a manner that dissolves their seemingly diametric natures and exposes an enigma of conflict and confluence inherent in their layered reality. But how can we contrast our established notions of maternity and infanticide with Scheper-Hughes' statements about them in a context that is emically true to the population her research is based on? Some things about maternity might seem clear: positive maternity encompasses nurturance and doting love, while negative maternity suggests neglect and even murder; yet Scheper-Hughes brings into question commonly held notions about the biological necessities and cultural expectations of maternity that reveal contradictions, blind alleys, and misleading parochial assumptions. This ethnography about the sugarcane workers of the Alto do Cruzeiro slum in the town of Bom Jesus, Brazil causes us to re-evaluate our understanding of maternity in the face of established cultural and biological contexts, and invites a more detailed, elemental, philosophical gaze. The observations made in Death Without Weeping force us to retreat in search of a neutral ground free from the biases we may hold about `American' or `Brazilian' maternity, and abandon our fear of naivety by asking, what in fact is maternity, and what do we know about it?

A gripping book, a masterful ethnography.

Scheper-Hughes At Her Very Best
By carmelbooks
I have seen death without weeping. The destiny of the Northeast is death. Cattle they kill, But to the people they do something worse. --Geraldo Vandre, Disparada
"Death Without Weeping: Violence of Everyday Life in Brazil" is a brilliant anthropological and sociological depiction of life in the Nordeste region of Brazil. In Death Without Weeping, Scheper-Hughes carefully analyzes the Mother-Child relationship in a region of Brazil with the highest infant mortality rate in Latin America. Centered in the village of Alto do Cruziero, Scheper-Hughes continues to work with the community she had first joined as a Peace Corps volunteer decades before. Rekindling her relationship with the villagers and the land, she takes a new perspective to study the emotional and physical strain on a region where every life is touched with the pain of infant mortality. She examines the frightening reality of a place where mothers have absolutely no safety net and cannot protect their children from the disease, hunger, and destitute living conditions.
Scheper-Hughes further discusses the role of international corporations and their influence (usually negative) in the Nordeste region.
Death Without Weeping is absolutely brilliant. Scheper-Hughes is at her finest, and her work is impeccable. This is one of the finest works of sociology and anthropology I have read.

About the Author

Greg Lukosek

Greg Lukosek was born and raised in the Upper Silesia region of Poland. When he was about 8 years old, his amazing parents bought him and his brother a Commodore C64. That was when his love of programming started. He would spend hours writing simple basic code, and when he couldn't write it on the computer directly, he used a notepad. Greg completed his mechanical engineering diploma at ZSTiO Meritum― Siemianowice Slaskie, Poland. He has learned all his programming skills through determination and hard work at home. Greg met the love of his life, Kasia, in 2003, which changed his life forever. They both moved to London in search of adventure and decided to stay there. He started work as a 3D artist and drifted away from programming for some years. Deep inside, he still felt the urge to come back to game programming. During his career as a 3D artist, he discovered Unity and adopted it for an interactive visualizations project. At that very moment, he started programming again. His love for programming overcomes his love for 3D graphics. Greg ditched his 3D artist career and came back to writing code professionally. He is now doing what he really wanted to do since he was 8 years old―developing games. These days, Greg lives in a little town called Sandy in the UK with Kasia and their son, Adam.

Not a programmer? Start with this book.

I have been trying to learn Unity for about 8 months. This is where I should have started 8 months ago. If you have no experience with coding then this is the book for you. 99% of Unity tutorials and books assume you are coming from a coding background and quickly tell you what code to write and don't bother to explain it. This is the first book that I have found that actually teaches you C# as it teaches you Unity. I really cannot recommend this book enough if you are coming to Unity from really any background other than computer science. I would pair this book with "Foundations of Programming: Fundamentals" by Simon Allardice on lynda and also Unity's tutorial "Roll-a-ball" for a complete beginners course.

Overpriced Mess
By Daniel Kauwe
This is an incredibly over-priced book at a cost of nearly fifty dollars, and it's also full of major omissions and other problems.

First, the book's layout is utterly ridiculous. Not only does every page have a one inch margin, inexplicably, often pages have an additional 1-2 inches of empty white-space, which means that 2 to 3 inches of page space are just wasted for pointless white-space. Furthermore, the headings are excessively large and also bounded with unnecessarily wide white-space. Finally, the main font size is oversized as if for seeing-impaired or remedial readers.

The idiotic layout issues continue. Most of the figures are useless screen-shots that over-explain interface matters that could be handled with simple text descriptions. Worse yet, many of the screenshots have massive amounts of empty space, wasting pages and pages of the book as much of the time, the screenshots fill an entire page.

To clarify, many screenshots show some specific interface detail, and many of those images, i.e. menu drop downs etc, are empty in the lower half. A sensible layout would have simply trimmed the screen-shots so as to make more efficient figures that can use page space better. This book, however, is not sensible, and I felt patronized and insulted by the constant barrage of useless screenshots taking up entire page after entire page.

If the book was priced significantly less, these things wouldn't bother me, but when the book is barely 200 pages, this sort of wastefulness infuriates me. I'm buying the book for informational purposes, not for a pretty layout that wastes page space and reduces value with huge amounts of empty filler. Compared to other C# and Unity 3D books that I've purchased, this book is a pure waste of money because of said problems. To be more specific, the book covers a very sparse amount of C# relative to many other C# tutorial books, worse, it provides only one actual game walk through that is rife with major omissions and errors.

The actual game tutorial is very basic, which isn't inherently a problem, but the fact that it omits certain critical bits of information makes the tutorial actually useless in terms of enabling the reader to make an actually functioning game.

The worst omission is the walk-through for collectibles. The author provides no guidance or instruction in terms of actually generating the collectibles within the game space constrained to the terrain/ground. This is a huge problem because the author presents an endless running game that uses an uneven game surface (gaps/holes and floating chunks of ground that the player can avoid or reach by jumping). Over the course of the game, players see how many coins they can collect as they run through the level.

I imagine that one needs fairly sophisticated code to generate the collectibles according to available and accessible surfaces. Afterall, it would make no sense to generate coins in a gap/hole as the player would fall and die (as in Super Mario Brothers), likewise, it would be stupid to generate coins in the air that aren’t accessible because there is no surface for players to reach through jumping. The author gives zero insight as to how you would bind the generation of the collectibles to the variable game surface/ground.

Given that this book has only one game example, this particular omission makes the book practically worthless as the author proposes that the fundamental game be a endless running and coin collecting game...but if the reader has no instruction in terms of generating and positioning the coins, then the entire walk-through is pointless as there is no guidance for placing the coins within the actual game.

Another huge omission is instruction in terms of generating the level chunks such that variable surfaces dove-tail in a way that makes sense functionally. The author does present code for randomly generating the level chunks that will cycle continuously in order to provide the infinite game ground/surface necessary for an endless running game. However, the author never discusses or explains how one would ensure these randomly generated level chunks match up in a way that actually makes sense functionally.

That is, since the level chunks are being randomly generated in a right to left manner, what constrains the level chunks such that the individual chunks match in terms of gaps, floating chunks, etc? For example, if one level chunk terminates with a gap, and then the subsequent level chunk starts with yet another gap, even if the player jumps at the first gap, the next gap will be impossible to clear and so the player will fall and die.

Again, the author makes no mention of how randomly generated level chunks are controlled so that they dovetail properly. Just to be precise, the author draws a distinction between level design that is of a fixed master design versus level design that is randomly generated. The book covers the random generation aspect but again, there is no information regarding the coding etc necessary to ensure that said random generation results in running/jumping surfaces that are functional and make sense.

The awfulness of this book just increases with the idiocy of numerous references to figures in terms of colors despite the fact that the book IS GRAY-SCALE!

I understand that this is a common practice with Packt books, and theoretically the reader is supposed to access supplementary materials hosted on Packt's website (I've bought a number of their books and they all follow this pattern). There are several problems with this.

First, Packt only actually grants access to the initial purchaser who buys direct from Packt. If you buy from a different source, you have to request the files, which is frustrating because it's a bunch of hoops to jump through just to be able to actually use a book for which I've already paid an exorbitant fee. I’m still waiting for access to files that I requested for a different title.

Second, even if you obtain the supplementary files, the book is literally useless unless you're sitting next to a computer and constantly referencing the color figures. This is a total deal breaker for me because the entire reason I buy physical books (rather than, say, ebooks), is that I want to read them while I’m commuting on the bus or train, or while I’m waiting for a meeting or an appointment. If the book requires access to a computer and/or the Internet, then I can’t make use of it in those situations.

I actually returned this book as “defective” for this exact reason. A book that costs nearly fifty dollars should be complete in and of itself, I shouldn’t need additional equipment like a computer in order to actually utilize the book.

The problem of color references in a gray-scale book isn’t just an aesthetic visual issue. Many of the figures in this book use color to differentiate between various different trigger points that control game play/flow. Without the actual colors, the reader has no way of knowing which of, say four circles, is the green one that triggers X and which is the red one that triggers Y etc etc (for example).

This is the point where I was so flabbergasted and incensed by all the problems with this book that I gave up trying to deal with the idiocy of this poorly structured nightmare and returned it to Amazon as “defective”. I never thought I’d ever experience a “defective” book, but one whose material relies on color figures that are actually rendered in uniform gray-scale, is definitely defective.

The Book of Enoch, by Robert Henry Charles, R. H. Charles

The apocryphal Book of Enoch, suppressed by the Church and then lost for many centuries, is believed to have been written in the first century or earlier. This edition-translated by British biblical scholar R. H. CHARLES (1855-1931) and first published in 1917-tells the story of the fallen angels, who appeal to Enoch the Prophet, great-grandson of Noah, to speak with God on their behalf after He banishes them from heaven. Enoch travels to heaven, describing what he sees there in detail, and speaks with the angels and ponders their nature. The book, in its original Hebrew or Aramaic, is believed to have influenced the writers of the New Testament, and while not considered canonical scripture, its apocalyptic themes continue to be highly influential today in modern popular Christian End Times fantasy, such as the Left Behind series. Students of the Bible who wish to explore related texts and those interested in foundational apocalyptic literature will find this book essential reading.

Review
"'The greatest importance of Enoch is that it was not only a pre-Christian book, but also a post-Christian book, a text from their Jewish background kept and used by the earliest churches. When we use Enoch as a 'context' for the New Testament, many early Christian ideas come into a much clearer focus, and many of the gaps in the New Testament can be bridged.' From The Lost Prophet: The Book of Enoch and its Influence on Christianity by Margaret Barker"

About the Author
Robert Henry Charles (1855–1931) was a biblical scholar and theologian. He is known particularly for English translations of apocryphal and pseudepigraphal works, and editions including Jubilees (1895), the Book of Enoch (1906).

Without question, purchase the R.H. Charles complete 450 page exhaustive edition from Artisan Publishers!
By Carol A. Foreman
This Book of Enoch needs to be in the hands of every serious Bible student as an indispensable aid in understanding the New Testament regarding the evolution of theology between 200 BC and 100 AD, and also the Old Testament concerning problem prophetical passages. The book was written by a number of Jewish writers around the second century BC, and was considered inspired Scripture in the century before Christ and up to the third century AD by such early Church Fathers, as Justin Martyr, Origen, Clement of Alexandria, and Tertullian. It was eventually removed from the canon of Scripture in the fourth century and was virtually lost to Western Christendom until the early 1800s AD, when Laurence published the first English translation based upon a single Ethiopic manuscript. There are several other popular versions in print today, but the only translation worthy of serious study is the R.H. Charles edition, published in the early 1900s after twenty years of extensive research. His translation is based upon 23 Ethiopic manuscripts and all available source fragments of the time. Compared to other translations, the Charles version is quite exhaustive in the number of pages (nearly twice as many as other editions). He, alone, offers an extensive, in-depth Introduction of over 100 pages, and a comprehensive analysis and criticism of the text, plus accurate verse numbering. This is definitely the version to purchase without question! Two other important ancient books readers might want to consider are The Book of Jasher Referred to in Joshua and II Samuel (1840 edition), and The Book of Jubilees translated from the Ethiopic by Schodde, offered by Artisan Publishers. To ensure accuracy of purchase of this complete translation of The Book of Enoch, cut and paste ISBN 0934666466.

A Review of This Edition - Not a Review of the Original Text
By Kat Crane
I am writing this review to assist the reader in selecting an EDITION of the Book of Enoch. This particular Edition is exceptionally scholarly - but not particularly readable for casual students or "simply curious" individuals. I am in complete agreement with previous reviewers that "The Book of Enoch ...(is) as an indispensable aid in understanding the New Testament regarding the evolution of theology between 200 BC and 100 AD..." Clearly, this collection of "Lost Books & Manuscripts" contains critical (and vastly under-considered) information relevant to Christianity, Judaism & Islam. However, the footnotes in this Edition vastly outweigh the text. Example: one page contained two lines of text and the entire remainder of the page was footnotes. (I am an attorney, and this volume made law school text books seem like Comic Books in comparison.) Although footnotes are undoubtedly essential to understanding the text, many of the footnotes in this edition contain lengthy paragraphs of the original Aramaic or Hebrew or Greek or Ethiopian texts - written in their original languages. So, even "skimming" the footnotes requires wading through several lines of very tiny text written in other languages. Additionally, the footnotes presuppose a familiarity with theological studies that most readers (including myself) do not have. In sum, "The Book of Enoch" is a MUST READ for anyone who wishes to fully understand the roots and contexts from which modern religion evolved. BUT, unless you are a serious Theological Scholar, I would suggest you find an edition that is perhaps annotated in a more "readable" and less "scholarly" fashion.

surprised by 3 things
By Janice Fletcher
I ordered this book, The Book of Enoch, on April 9, 2010. A nice surprise when the book arrived was the book's final page that says "Made in the USA, Lexington, KY, 10 April 2010". A freshly printed copy!

Surprise #2 was found on a beginning page..."Forgotten Books takes the uppermost care to preserve the wording and images from the original book. However, this book has been scanned and reformatted from the original, and as such we cannot guarantee that it is free from errors or contains the full content of the original." I wanted a "full content" and probably got it. It is a beautifully done book and I'm glad I blindly ordered this edition.

Surprise #3 was a note in the back of the book concerning many books free to read on their web site. On going to the site, it appears that you need a membership to read them but you don't. A very nice bonus! Lots of books there among my interests.

This book company is "Forgotten Books".
