In her illuminating work and unbound passion, Tahmina Watson reminds us how immigrants that have been the fiber of what has made US an innovation powerhouse that stands to be challenged today in the global economy.

With focus on US policy, she probes and demands us to join her in the movement to shine the light on the issue at hand and what we stand to lose if immigration laws are not changed.

She accomplishes this by not only blending history but also providing real life examples today about the importance of the Startup Visa if US desires to continue staying relevant in the world. Examples include Alibaba (think Amazon, eBay, Paypal combined) - the Chinese ecommerce behemoth with market valuation surpassing that of Walmart or India quickly turning into the de facto as incubator and technology hub.

This book is very informative and offers keen insight into the issues surrounding business visas for entrepreneurs. The book guides us into legislative history, comparisons with Canada and solutions for start up business visas. The author is an incredibly compassionate attorney who is sought after for her immigration skills and insight. This book is short and to the point and is an excellent guide for both immigrants and US companies alike.

An engaging contribution to the national dialog on immigration at an important time

The fact that there are many talented people from around the world who would love to bring their skills and experience to the USA probably isn't a big surprise, and neither is the fact that this is quite difficult for them to immigrate here. What might be surprising, and should be worrying is that because of these boundaries the US is beginning to fall behind in attracting the kind of global talent that creates companies like Levi Strauss, Yahoo!, and Ebay. Tahmina Watson does an excellent job of providing background on American immigration policy, showing how countries such as Canada, the UK, Italy, New Zealand, Chile, and many others have developed programs to attract entrepreneurs, and then giving a concrete explanation of how the US could do the same.

I am Back into Sous Vide Cooking

I hadn't used my Sous Vide machine in three years. The recipe books available when I bought it were primitive and unimaginative. This book's reviews were so favorable that I ordered it and I am so happy I did. There are so many more uses for the machine than I was aware of and so many foods to cook using it. Last night we had the brightly seasoned pork chops and a wonderful beet dish. Can't wait to make onion soup and mashed potatoes and so many dishes I would have never have thought would come from a sous vide machine. The rub we used on the pork chops is worth the price of the book itself. Well written, helpfully detailed, scores of recipes---a perfect cook book.

If you're going to get a sous vide book then I'd go for this one... It starts with everything you need to know to get started, followed by about 200 pages of simple yet interesting recipes - both for weekday meals and special occasions (including cocktails!) The Essential Sous Vide Cookbook is very well written by someone who clearly knows a great deal about the technique. The book is nicely laid out with lots of helpful illustrations, photos, and tips and tricks too. It's right up to date too (as of mid-December 2016) which is a big bonus in the world of sous vide. Great value also. 5/5 stars.

Save your money. You won't regret it.

The information about how to cook "sous vide" is short but without any nonsense about beer coolers, freezer or zip-lock
-bags full of liquids, etc. And, the recipes, plus the very low price of the book can easily compete - and win - with those very expensive hardcover books full of impractical "sous vide" methods and typical recipes being sold here.

    Outstanding work by the authors- recommended for basically anyone of any age

    I highly recommend this book for parents, kids, role models (grandparents, aunts/uncles, mentors, teachers), but i also fully recommend it for any adult who would love to create something on their smartphone quickly and even experienced industry professionals so they can dream and invent. The authors have worked really hard not just to transmit knowledge (which they do well), but coming up with engaging challenges that can hook the attention and imaginations of young and old alike.

    As an adult, I am now a software architect, but have created with software since I was a young child, and now have children of my own. Creating software hooked my interest early, yet I have repeatedly tried to interest the kids in our family tree to create with software: every single experiment has failed. I even tried to get the oldest kids into App Inventor when I had early access years ago, but to my dismay, could not get them engaged. I specifically acquired this book to try again. By creating not just a readable book, but an excellent experience - the authors have helped me finally achieve this goal successfully.. and quite amazingly, with my four year old son. Plus, I had more fun creating software than I have in quite a long time, reminiscent of when I was a child.

    The obvious work they put into creating this book is why I give it such a high rating. At first glance, one may say it would be easy to write a great book on this topic because it is such a great subject/platform to teach: Google initially and MIT now have done a tremendous job in building something with App Inventor that allows children and anyone to create smartphone apps quickly and enjoyable. Yet, teaching this platform could be done in a number of different ways, ranging from pure boring rubbish all the way to a quality and engaging experience. The high edge of this scale is what the authors have achieved - they have obviously worked really hard in brainstorming ideas that would spark childlike imagination in kids, teenagers, adults, industry professionals, and obviously even themselves. The combination of the underlying platform and the author's delivery and creativity lead to this result: kids and adults alike can be creating smartphone apps with enjoyment in minutes thanks to their hard work. I have not seen any other book in my field do that with such speed - it is a testament to the technology and the authors work.

    I don't want to steal the book's thunder by revealing all of their clever 'app inventions' but just wanted to give a glimpse of the creative work they put in. In these experiences, the reader will learn about working with events of the touchscreen, clocks and timers, animations, sensing movement and the outside world, getting the phone to speak aloud or interpreting speech, connecting to the web and APIs, and knowing where in the world you are - but this is standard knowledge. The experiences will have kids creating games with making a sheep making sounds but getting scared when shaken, a spooky sound generator, a game for learning flinging/dragging/touching, recording dreams, a compass app that takes three minutes to make, and the list goes on and on, all the way up to a nice 'capstone' app inventor project - a full multi-level game at the end.

    I want to dive into specifics briefly rather than overarching statements: While teaching the core material, they kept explanations brief (for short attention spans, whatever age) and when they did explain something complex or novel (which abound in software), they came up with very creative analogies for relating the material (some that impressed me). Each chapter is conceptually related to achieving some goals with the new unlocked knowledge and then has several 'apps' that the reader can build and these can usually be done in only a few minutes (varies between 5 and 30 on average). These apps are where the biggest value of their work is: they obviously worked much harder than most authors in coming up with something that would truly engage their target audience (kids and the rest of us) and they truly succeeded, through nearly the entire book. Finally, they purposefully made their apps not 'complete' or 'perfect' and suggested ways to take their initial work further, either by using skills unlocked later in the book (inviting readers to come back to their previous puzzles) or by suggesting ways to make it better by using your own creativity. My son and I were able to brainstorm and play with nearly all of the apps to take them further in our own ways (for example, we always wanted an app icon, something they taught us early so we kept reusing).

    One final caveat: I thought about giving it 4.5 stars simply because the book isn't a work of utter perfection, but no book is. These things are minor - there are some editing errors (where incorrect properties are missed) or conventions aren't always followed - this will probably confuse some young readers, especially those who are old enough to take it on themselves. These are few in count though. The only other feedback I can offer is that the book dragged in a crucial part - where it was getting initial momentum. This is because it got caught up in the place where every single software teacher does - explaining the drudgery of conditions, loops, logic, and operators. I would have preferred they just mixed this in along the way and not went into this valley where they will certainly incur some casualties in lost readers (either metaphorically or actually). Yet, these comments are getting picky and suggesting further improvements for what I hope will be a future edition of the book (once App Inventor 3 comes out with I hope cross-compiling to iPhone, Windows Phone, and Android and touch enabled user interface for building apps) - all in all, a superb work!

    Excellent book, easy to read, step by step complete tutorials. All tutorial's codes (*.aia files) are available online to the buyer includind all the assets (images, sounds, etc) used in the tutorial. Best book for App Inventor 2.

    Superb Book for Learning App Inventor

    This book is an excellent introduction to using the graphical programming language App Inventor to create apps for Android devices. The book's subtitle emphasizes that the book is meant for people of all ages. Its step-by-step approach with an abundance of full color illustrations supports this claim. The ubiquitous use of color draws the reader in and makes the book both interesting and entertaining. Color is absolutely necessary for accurately representing both the layouts of the screen elements and the manipulations of the underlying graphical blocks that animate the programs. The authors have done a superb job here and the care that was taken is evident throughout the book.

    The authors walk the reader through the creation of 35 apps using a step-by-step approach. These apps exercise a significant number of the interactive features present on Android devices. The associated graphical and sound resources needed to create the apps are provided as a download by the authors on the publisher's web site.

    Unfortunately, this is one area where the authors' attention to detail stumbled. This reviewer used the book to create nine of the apps from scratch. Instances of missing or misnamed files disrupted what should have been a smooth process. In addition, some of the audio files were provided in a format that this reviewer's Samsung device refused to play, displaying an error message during execution instead. Since this book is targeted at novice programmers, more care should have been taken in providing these files to avoid situations where readers would encounter errors and unpredictable behavior that are not a result of actions on their part.

    With that said, this reviewer highly recommends this book to anyone wanting to create apps for Android devices. The book is well done and is an excellent resource for learning about the App Inventor environment.

    PREFACE THE PLAN OF THE THIRD EDITION

    How do businesses succeed in today's competitive environment? The factor that can set an organization apart is its people. The quality of the organization's employees, their enthusiasm and satisfaction with their jobs, their experience, and sense of fair treatment all affect the firm's productivity, customer service, reputation, and survival. In short, people make the difference.

    Although relatively few students in Human Resource Management (HRM) courses will become HR specialists, virtually all will have to work with other people. Dealing with other people is a fact of organizational life, regardless of whether you are in accounting, finance, operations management, or same other area. Because we believe that every manager is a human resource manager, we've written our book for students who plan to manage others at same time in their career.

    The idea that all future managers need to understand HRM issues is at the heart of Managing Human Resources. We cover all the core HRM topics, but our managerial perspective makes the topics meaningful to students in any area of business. Our emphasis is on how to manage human resources and haw to successfully implement HRM programs. Because managers in all departments and functions confront HR issues daily, we believe this approach is better than one that looks at HRM primarily from the perspective of the HR department.

    Since the first edition of Managing Human Resources was published in 1995, the general management perspective has become much more prevalent among practicing managers. Recent environmental and organizational forces have contributed greatly to this trend. Organizations are becoming flatter. Technology such as the Internet fosters communication between all levels of personnel, and managers are expected to be generalists with a broad set of skills, including HRM skills. At the same time, fewer firms have a highly centralized, powerful HR department that acts as monitor, decision maker, and controller of HR practices throughout the organization.

    Information technology also encourages a managerial approach to human resources. Why? The technology has permeated most traditional HR functions, decentralizing decisions and increasing the participation of managers and employees in all aspects of HR practice. Managers and employees have greater access to human resource information, both inside and outside the company, through bath formal (Web pages) and informal (chat rooms and e-mail messages) means. An effect of the Internet, then, has been to democratize the turf of the traditional HR department. Specifically, information technology has had a tremendous effect on HR areas such as the following:

    Work design (greater use of virtual teams) Management of diversity (as personal characteristics such as race, gender, ethnicity and the like are not immediately evident to others inside and outside the firm) Recruitment (much of which is taking place through the Internet) Selection (using computer-based tests, application blanks, reference screening and the like) Training and development (with a large amount of materials that are quickly updated available on the Web) Compensation (providing quick updates to salary survey data, benchmarking practices in other firms, and making it possible to use more complicated incentive programs) Employee relations (employees feel free to use the Internet to express their views at all organizational levels) International HR and the management of expatriates (much work can now be done over the Internet regardless of location, nationality, and even local regulations)

    The growing importance of a general management perspective to HRM has not lessened the importance of HR specialists, however. Many tools and techniques for selection, training, compensation, performance appraisal, and other traditional HR functions can greatly enhance the quality of hires, the skills of the workforce, job satisfaction, and employee motivation. But HR specialists' focus has shifted from one of control to one of advice and support to line managers. The forces reinforcing this trend include downsizing, outsourcing of the HR function, information technology, and the inclusion of HR courses in masters', undergraduate, and executive education programs designed for the general manager (rather than the HR specialist).

    Our goal for the third edition of Managing Human Resources is to emphasize a general management approach .even more than we did in the two previous editions. This third edition offers an updated and more applied content with an even clearer emphasis on the managerial perspective. Six key features of the third edition showcase our approach:

    New chapter introductions titled "The Managerial Perspective" summarize why the chapter content is relevant to managers. A new end-of-chapter feature called Managerial Skills Builder: Issues and Exercises" presents a managerial situation relevant to each chapter topic, and concludes with analytical questions and issues, experiential exercises, and group projects such as role plays and debates. Two chapter-ending "You Manage It!" discussion cases focus on HR issues from a manager's perspective. The influence of information technology on HR is addressed in every chapter. Globalization and its effect on HR practices and issues receive expanded coverage throughout the text. We have retained a newly updated version of the chapter on international HR management from the second edition that deals with the unique HR problems that multinational organizations face. Over 500 new references have been added to summarize and integrate the most recent HR research.

    The response to the first and second editions has been gratifying. It also reminds us how much has changed in the work world in the past six years. To keep pace with these changes and respond to your feedback, we combed though each chapter to eliminate dated material and incorporate the latest information available. Here is a summary of key chapter-by-chapter highlights.

    Chapter 1, "Meeting Present and Emerging Strategic Human Resource Challenges," has been substantially revised, focusing on emerging environmental and organizational changes affecting HR practices, such as the rise of the Internet and a new focus on work/life balance to help retain employees. Chapter 2, "Managing Work Flows and Conducting Job Analysis," has expanded coverage of teams, including virtual teams and problem-solving teams. In addition, this chapter offers more extensive coverage on contingent workers, including the effect of the Microsoft court decision regarding temporary workers. Chapter 3, "Understanding Equal Opportunity and the Legal Environment," includes important new case law in several areas including the Americans with Disabilities Act, and EEO and sexual harassment rulings (such as same sex harassment and the impact of having an effective sexual harassment policy). Chapter 4, "Managing Diversity," now discusses how technology can improve diversity efforts and gives updated information on the rationale for and facts about diversity. In addition, the chapter gives the most current information about seniors, people with disabilities, and recruiting and retaining a diverse, global workforce. Chapter 5, "Recruiting and Selecting Employees," has been significantly revised to update and give more depth to our coverage of recruiting (including on-line recruiting), and expand and clarify our presentation of quantitative issues. The topic of socialization has been moved from this chapter to Chapter 8. Chapter 6, "Managing Employee Separations, Downsizing, and Outplacement," adds more discussion about managing voluntary employee separations and downsizing in a tight labor market. It also covers recent trends, such as the "brain drain" of talented seniors and new options for outplacement. Chapter 7, "Appraisal and Managing Performance," has new coverage on team appraisal, 360-degree appraisal in this and other countries, and role-based performance. Chapter 8, "Training the Workforce," showcases advances in on-line, virtual, cross-functional, and basic skills training and offers new material on goal-based training. An updated discussion of socialization has been moved from Chapter 5 to this chapter. Chapter 9, "Managing Careers," has expanded coverage on self development, counseling (on-line and otherwise), mentoring (including counseling for assignments in other countries), and competency-based career development. Chapter 10, "Managing Compensation," has updated material on compensation strategies needed in a tight labor market including an emphasis on flexibility and helping workers attain a work/life balance. Chapter 11, "Rewarding Performance," offers a stronger emphasis on cutting-edge pay incentives to help recruit and retain employees. New coverage includes incentives based on customer service ratings, a section on directors and shareholders as equity partners, and new CEO compensation techniques in this and other countries. Chapter 12, "Designing and Administering Benefits," includes new developments in designing and administering pension benefits, new regulations that affect benefits such as the Family Medical Leave Act and the Wealth Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), and the effect of technology on benefit administration. Chapter 13, "Developing Employee Relations," has increased emphasis on developing relations through technology (e-mail, HR Web sites, and so on), and managing telecommuters and other offsite employees. Features also help students improve their coaching and feedback skills. Chapter 14, "Respecting Employee Rights and Managing Discipline," includes new information an the rights of employees/employers regarding trade secrets, soliciting business from former customers, recruiting ca-workers from a previous job, e-mail privacy and on-line Web use, and mare applied coverage of the employment-at-will doctrine.     Well organized and synthetic

    This book contains the basic principles that any HR or General Manager (especially in the US) is supposed to know.
    I have been using this textbook as a guide for my MBA studies.
    I found it very useful in that it clearly explains and organizes almost every important topic about HR management. It gives practical clues on the kind of considerations a manager needs to be aware in day-to-day operation.
    I used this book to find basic, straightforward ideas about HR principles and how this function is changing in the era of globalization. This way, I could use it to organize my own ideas, and if needed, using the enclosed bibliography, I could go to more specialized books on a particular topic of interest.

    This book is about the light like (degenerate) geometry of submanifolds needed to fill a gap in the general theory of submanifolds. The growing importance of light like hypersurfaces in mathematical physics, in particular their extensive use in relativity, and very limited information available on the general theory of lightlike submanifolds, motivated the present authors, in 1990, to do collaborative research on the subject matter of this book. Based on a series of author's papers (Bejancu [3], Bejancu-Duggal [1,3], Dug� gal [13], Duggal-Bejancu [1,2,3]) and several other researchers, this volume was conceived and developed during the Fall '91 and Fall '94 visits of Bejancu to the University of Windsor, Canada. The primary difference between the lightlike submanifold and that of its non� degenerate counterpart arises due to the fact that in the first case, the normal vector bundle intersects with the tangent bundle of the submanifold. Thus, one fails to use, in the usual way, the theory of non-degenerate submanifolds (cf. Chen [1]) to define the induced geometric objects (such as linear connection, second fundamental form, Gauss and Weingarten equations) on the light like submanifold. Some work is known on null hypersurfaces and degenerate submanifolds (see an up-to-date list of references on pages 138 and 140 respectively). Our approach, in this book, has the following outstanding features: (a) It is the first-ever attempt of an up-to-date information on null curves, lightlike hypersur� faces and submanifolds, consistent with the theory of non-degenerate submanifolds.
