Needed for class, everything is online nowadays.
By Pavl
So I was required to get this book to class but honestly everything in it you can find online for free with video tutorials and such. This would only be a necessary book if you have no access to the internet.
But if you need the book it has well detailed steps and illustrations with the commands.

Good book to learn AutoCAD but with limitations
By mark vitacco
I will start by stating there is no perfect text book, I have seen a lot worse than the Dix book.
The pro's: This book does an excellent job teaching you how to use the software. The tutorials are accurate and easy to follow.
The con's: The book's weakness is with respect to following established drafting conventions. Turn to just about any page, and you will find inaccuracies or omissions with respect to drafting conventions. The author creates a lot of confusion but not using model and paper space as professions in industry. There is a lot of emphasis on setting limits and using a grid, and (grid) snap, professionals, least the ones I work with, don't work this way. The design indent of AutoCAD is that model space is not restricted. AutoCAD uses layout tabs to define the paper space used for plotting. My last comment, is there is little emphasis (1/2 page?) on the Annotative Scale feature. This is a huge feature available since 2008, that I believe will greatly simplify annotation for beginners, and should be covered in detail.

the graphic images of screen shots
By Hunter Anderson
When you enlarge the screenshot of the graphic image that they are trying to show you it becomes heavily pixelated. Other than that the book is fine
