one of only two books on skiboarding

There are only two books on skiboarding and I have to recommend that you get both for all the info you need. The first is the bigfoot book by MM press hard to fined but worth it. This is the other. Doc does a very good job on this book and if he is reading here are the things I would like to see in a 2nd ed. More illustrations and photos to go with the great text. The second is to expand more on the use of skiboards in powder and the backcountry. Maybe even some info on how climbers use skiboards to get to some climbs. All in all a good book for any one interested in skiboarding.

"Breath-taking scenery" not found

I was disappointed and am returning this book. The first picture in the book is of random people hugging in Flint airport- how is this considered "breathtaking scenery?" (And since when was Flint considered a tourist destination? The only lists it makes are "Top 10 Most Dangerous Places to Live.") Only a few pages are full photos, too many pages are of one small picture with a ton of blank white space around it. There are some nice landscapes, but too many pictures of random people doing things that could have been taken anywhere- such as the close-up photo of a child's face with facepaint on and the family potrait where they are sitting on a sailboat. I bought this book with the intention of bringing it to another country to show them what Michigan looks like, but this book doesn't do a very good job of that. I found something else instead.
I think this book could have been a winner if it had a better editor who chose more appropriate "Spring in Michigan" photos, and cropped/resized them to fill up the page.

Manifold impressions of Standard English varieties

The book presents an illustrative overview of standard varieties of English and (English-based creoles) around the world. It departs from the two main standard varieties, English English and American English, and contrasts all other varieties of standard English with these two, showing tendencies of divergence (phonology) and convergence (grammar, lexis). The major part of the volume is dedicated to differences between English English and North American English. More than other introductions to varieties of English Trudgill/Hannah deal with differences in language use (aside from differences in the language system). They include a survey of usage and stylistic differences with prepositions, auxiliaries, verb phrase substitutions, articles, pronouns etc. The book doesn't get 5 stars, however, for two reasons: (1) The authors don't give the sources for their (statistical) results; they don't say what corpus has been analyzed, nor do they show exactly (in figures) how salient a statistical difference between varieties is (which would enable the reader to decide whether there is a true difference, whether other sociolinguistic factors are more salient etc.); (2) Certain pragmatic areas like politeness strategies and differences related to text-types (which also belong to language use) are neglected. All in all, however, the authors' approach is a pragmatically well-chosen one, which makes the book recommendable to both natives and non-natives, and to both students and teachers of English.

rare material but not international enough

Audio material like this cassette can be a great asset when teaching "English as an international language." Unfortunately, there is not much audio material around so this cassette will probably be the best you can get.
However, for a casette dealing with INTERNATIONAL English the recordings focus too much on inner cirlce varieties. There is no sample from Nigerian English, for instance. It would also been interesting to have samples from some non-native speakers from Europe or Asia.
Also, the speakers only repeat the sample text. While this enables one to distinguish features of the variety in question quite clearly, it also tends to become quite dull. Additionally to the sample-text some other speech samples (like jokes, for instance) would lighten things up a bit.

A mind opener

I bought an earlier edition of this work, when still a student at the university. This edition is even better, with its updates and new information.

It is no good thinking of Engliah as a lingua franca you can use anywhere if you are not prepared for its variants. Then you cannot understand or be understood. This book gives you insight of a theoretical nature you can also put to work in practical terms.

It is very thorough. I particularly like the distinctions it makes for English even close to home. You sail off the big island and the Channel may have some surprises for you.

Summing up, I would recommend this book to students and practitioners alike. Scholarly, yet practical!

About the Author

Peter Newman is professor of city policy and director of the Institute for Sustainability and Technology Policy at Murdoch University in Perth, Australia. He recently completed a Fulbright scholarship, which he spent at the University of Virginia studying sustainability initiatives in the U.S. He is the author of Sustainability and Cities (Island Press, 1999).

 

Isabella Jennings is a graduate student in the School of Environmental Science at Murdoch University. Her past and current research is related to the cities as sustainable ecosystems idea.

Skims the surface of a deeper topic

This book comes across as presenting in-depth information on creating sustainability within cities by utilizing a systems approach. Instead, what it is is a long restatement of "the Ten Melbourne Principles for Sustainable Cities", a set of principles developed at a conference held in Melbourne, Australia. All of the principles are covered in the introduction. The authors then rehash them in ten chapters incorporating a lot of naivete along the way.

One theme that keeps recurring in the book is the idea that indigenous cultures are more aware than other cultures of the importance of preserving the ecosystems on which they depend. This is a good example of "survivor bias". The authors pay attention to cultures that have survived, ignoring all the failed indigenous cultures. They are also making a misleading statement about these cultures by suggesting their practices were such that they would have continued on had they not been interrupted by Europeans.

The authors give some broad, non-science based introductions to topics like resilience, panarchy, and ecosystems, going so far as to misrepresent an ecosystem as some sort of smoothly running conflict-free process. Nature is cutthroat. It is unforgiving to elements that are causing problems. It is not the sort of place where the members are focused on "Fostering a sense of joy and belonging through rituals and celebrations following natural cycles" (p.47). Unless, of course, you see a bear taking down a moose then killing any animal that tries to interfere with his meal a joyful celebration.

On the bright side, I think this book provides a lot of introductory information and some good references on the topics it addresses.
