Extremely Useful.

Whenever I read a book, I generally use highlighter and underliner to mark the sentences and words that convey the true meaning and essence of what the author wants to say. While reading The Tibetan Book of Living And Dying, I had to stop using the highlighter after a few pages only as the most of the words on each page were worthy of being highlighted. Indeed, the author has said so much precious on every page that a reader must read and re-read the book and with every reading she/he gets more and more knowing.The subject of death has been most puzzling and perplexing to humankind since the time immemorial. The Eastern way of looking at the death as only a 'transition' is explained by the author in a profoundly simple manner. The book certainly helps one to understand the true meaning of the phenomena called death. This understanding helps one to reduce the irrational fear of death. From the lives of the great men and women we know that those who 'lived' a life can only meet the 'death' with equnimity. Thus the author has first taught the art of 'living'. It is only through right type of living that we can 'live' the death also.
I suggest that this book be read by all the Buddhist as well as by non buddhists also. Every one who reads it will find something for him/her.
I salute Sogyal Rinpoche for giving us a wonderful gift of THE TIBETAN BOOK OF LIVING AND DYING.

After reading other reviews, I feel it might help to say this:
Yes, there is quite a substantial amount of Tibetan ritual encased in this book. But that shouldn't be a surprise, or a hindrance - it IS the "TIBETAN Book of Living and Dying", and not the "Generically Believable For Everyone, Book of Living And Dying".
With that in mind, I loved reading this book. From the first page, I was drawn into a world where compassion and mindfulness reign, and it's these tools that will help us face the inevitable truth that we *are* all going to die, at some point.
Rinpoche skillfully shares his own wisdom, that of many other masters, and anecdotal evidence of what may happen when we physically die, and the stages we may go through during the process.
Topics discussed include the Bardo states, reincarnation, the concept of karma, and fear of the unknown. The book is very readable, and covers the material therein with sensitivity and warmth. At times, it may be difficult to the average Western mind to grasp the concepts of such things are reincarnation - but as Buddha himself did advise, the goal is to read, absorb and take what YOU find important from the lesson...not to read blindly and accept everything blindly.
To anyone even vaguely interested in Buddhism, death and dying or simply becoming more aware of their own self, this book is an invaluable addition to your library.
Truly a classic.

a must for a Buddhist library

This book fully captures the essence of Tibetan Buddhism. I don't claim to be an authority on the subject, but I was born into a Buddhist household that has remained faithful and reverent to both Mahayana and Hiyana traditions of Buddhism. From the information I've had passed on to me by both family and Tibetan Buddhist clergy, this book has never been contradictory to anything lecture I've heard. In fact, everybody seems to recommend it enthusiastically!
Essentially, according to Tibetan Buddhism, the purpose of living is to cultivate the mind and purify the body and soul to prepare for death. Westerners may, at first glance, find this philosophy morbid. However, we must remember that reincarnation is integral to Buddhist text (and most world religions, for that matter; the 'one life' theory is actually relatively new). Death is explained as a transitional period, like the end of a chapter to a book. To waste away ones life is like wasting away all your money without care for the future. Basically, this philosophy heavily emphasizes living in the present with thoughtfulness and offers a plethora of Buddhist insight into life and death. It also stresses the urgency of cultivation in a day and age when we disregard life, old age, and disease as trivial matters and nothing that science cannot combat.
The Tibetan Book of Living and Dying is written by a Rinpoche. For those who are not familiar with Tibetan titles, a Lama is essentially a monk who has abandond wordly comforts for a spiritual pursuit, and a Rinpoche is a recognized reincarnation of an esteemed Lama.
If you are a Buddhist, I highly recommend this book. It is enlightening, insightful, and an absolute must in any Buddhist library. Whether you follow the traditions of Chinese Buddhism, Zen or Chan, take the Amitabha or Guan Yin approach, etc., as a fellow Buddhist to another, you should not go without having this book. It's available in Chinese, as well, for the Buddhists out there who are more adept at Chinese than English.
For seekers, this is a wonderful guide, as well. The best part with any book as wonderful as this is that everytime you read it, you'll find new insight in the words. Beginners and established Buddhists alike will take in much insight.
I also highly recommend this to Buddhists who are unfamiliar with the Tibetan traditions. The Tibetan texts will open a whole new door for you. I know from personal experience, because my mother (who is the spiritual leader of the family) was originally a student of Chinese Buddhism, but after reading this book, our entire family discovered a whole other arena of philosophies that have done nothing but enrich our practices.
So whether you're already a Buddhist wishing to broaden your knowledge, a Buddhist who would like new material to absorb, or a seeker who is just curious of the fundamentals of Tibetan Buddhism, this book is definitely a must.

About the Author
Philip V. Hunt is president of Perspicuous Technologies Inc. He is a former British Royal Navy air engineer officer and U.S. government DARPA program manager. He has over 40 years of experience in acquisition, financial management, requirements development, project management, RDT&E, engineering, and operation of various fixed-wing and helicopter aircraft in the U.K. and the U.S. He has specialist experience in aero-propulsion, STOVL, rotary- and fixed-wing design, and maritime air operations and airworthiness. He was the first onsite U.K. program manager in the U.S.-based JAST/JSF/F-35 program. As program manager at DARPA, he managed the Walrus (heavy lift airship), A160, Morphing Aircraft, DP-5X, Canard Rotor Wing, Heavy Fuel Engine, and other advanced technology efforts. A chartered engineer, he is a Fellow of the RAeS and IMech.E, and a member of AIAA.

Inspired by Brian Arthur's El Farol Bar Game, the minority Game provided the path for the entry of many statistical physicists into econophysics. Game theory, since the 1980's, has become a large part of economic theory, but is largely restricted to studies of Nash equilibria, which (by Nash's own design) is a neo-classical idea. Economic systems are instead complex, not amenable to any imaginable equilibrium analysis. As Per Bak said, equilibrium is a dead system, like a glass of water at rest. Challet, Marsili, and Zhang are three leading researchers in economics, and are the experts on the Minority Game.

This book begins with a very nice introduction to the main ideas and then includes a compilation of the main papers in the field by the Fribourg Group, who are leaders in the new and growing field of econophysics, and other main players. Physicists will enjoy seeing the tools of statistical mechanics in action in an economic setting, and economists will be encouraged to think outside their equilibrium straightjacket by studying the book. Renee Mercer is a Certified Pediatric Nurse Practitioner specializing in the treatment of children with enuresis, or bed wetting. She sees children with bed wetting and daytime wetting in her private practice, Enuresis Associates, in Elkridge, Maryland. She has a tremendous success rate. Renee developed her interest in enuresis after appreciating the great unmet need of children with the condition. After years of frustration finding suitable products for children with bed wetting, Renee co-founded The Bedwetting Store. Renee lives with her husband and three sons in Maryland.

Best Dry Night Book Ever

This book is excellent. It contains useful, practical, easy to use tips on keeping your older child dry at night. I totally recommend this book to any family struggling with this issue.

I have read everything I could find on this subject in the last two years and this book still provided some new information (eg double voiding ... which really helps). This is also the first time I have read of a technique for using a star chart that will actually encourage a child that is hardly ever dry.

The only things I would add is that (1) you can now get cheap bedwetting alarms on eBay that clip to the clothes and work very well ($10 including postage), (2) we found using our alarm with a pull up worked best (put on underwear, then place alarm sensor on the outside of the underwear, then put a pullup right on top). We could still tell whether it was a small, medium or large wet (and yay! when it was totally dry), but it meant that all we had to wash was the underwear (not the sheets every day). This is more expensive though, because you have to buy pull-ups. But for our child (who has Aspergers) it avoided the night time upset that would come with wet sheets.

A must-have companion to a bedwetting alarm!

I just wrote a review for the "Malem Ultimate Selectable Bedwetting Alarm with Vibration - Camouflage." In that review, I stated that one must purchase this book in order to optimize your chances of success... one without the other will not work as well.

Bottom line is that this book (along with the Malem Alarm) succeeded in getting our 10-year old son to stop wetting the bed. Took about two months, but that includes the four-week dryness period before declaring success.

Our son has been completely dry now for seven weeks... amazing (to his mother & I) but true!

Thoroughly recommended.

I knew that I wanted to use a bedwetting alarm with my 6-year-old, and I had talked to a friend who'd had success with one, so with a bit of advice from her I thought I could get by without buying the book. After a couple of weeks with the alarm on its own, I changed my mind and I'm glad I did. While I agree with other readers that the book is very brief and could probably be a pamphlet, I found it to be very useful and reassuring. I especially liked the first chapter, which discussed the issue of bedwetting in general and provided some insight into possible causes and information about treatment options like medications. The other best part was information about a reward plan for my son (including printable pages for notes), which I was struggling with. I felt weird rewarding him (or not rewarding him on wet mornings) when I fully believed that he couldn't control it at all. I knew that just wanting a reward wasn't going to retrain his body, so the book helped by providing a suggestion for compliance rewards along the way and information about how we can deem him done with training as well as how long we might expect it all to take. It was worth the price for the confidence it provided in the process.

What our immigration policy has done to one family

I saw Diane on a panel on Face the Nation and bought the book. I also got the audible version so I listened to the author read most of the book. I did not know until nearly the end that she was on Orange is the new Black and Jane the Virgin.

When she was 14 years old, living in Boston, both parents were deported to Columbia. Diane was born in the US so she was a citizen. Friends took her in. She was able to attend a good high school. She is beautiful and talented and so she made it as an actress. Her family problems did not start that day, however. Her parents were extremely anxious all of the time. Her older brother was also deported.

I recommend reading this book to better understand what our undocumented population live with. If the US had better control over visas, some of these situations would be avoided. But how to respond to the millions already here, people who have lived lawfully for a decade, that is the question. We also need to realize that these people are a part of the economy. There is a reason why the Congress, responsible for establishing a naturalization process in the Constitution, have failed to do their job. That reason needs to be brought to light and made known to the public. The consequences of continuing the current situation. Also needs a full debate.

An eye-opening and very relevant read

In a country that is facing mass deportations, this book is very relevant. All of us are familiar with the term "deportation," but few us realize the ramifications, not only to the deportees, but their families. This is a story of true courage, the saga of a fourteen year old child who deals first hand with the devastating effects of deportation. This should be a must read for everyone, especially the incoming members of our federal government who will be shaping future immigration policy. This story is real, riveting, and not sappy. Ms. Guerrero has succeeded in giving us a snapshot into a reality in this country that many don't realize or choose to ignore. An eye-opening read, to say the least.

Her story needs to be heard!

This was an inspiring read! It is very eye opening. Her childhood story needs to be told. Many children have gone through this in our country, yet they are too afraid to speak up! I was fortunate enough to hear Diane speak at the University of California, Riverside. She spoke about her book and the issues she and her parents faced. She also spoke briefly about her career. I had my book signed by her. Needless, to say I couldn't wait to read it. I was not disappointed! It was a worthy read! Diane bravely tells her story and gives children going through what she did in our country a voice! While many people may know her from Orange is the New Black or Jane the Virgin, there is much more to Diane than that! She is couragesly using her platform to send an important message. Everyone needs to read this!
