About the Author
Greg Johnson received an M.A. in English from Southern Methodist University and a Ph.D. in English from Emory University. Dr. Johnson is the author of books of fiction, poetry, criticism, and biography, including the recent story collections, LAST ENCOUNTER WITH THE ENEMY (Johns Hopkins, 2004) and WOMEN I'VE KNOWN: NEW AND SELECTED STORIES (Ontario Review, 2007), the novel STICKY KISSES (Alyson Books, 2001), and two books on Joyce Carol Oates: INVISIBLE WRITER: A BIOGRAPHY OF JOYCE CAROL OATES (Plume, 1999), and JOYCE CAROL OATES: CONVERSATIONS 1970-2006 (Ontario Review, 2006). The American way is killing the American nation.

Greg Johnson is the very best representative of the young cultural movement known most commonly as the "alt right", and this book contains some of his most important essays yet. Greg cuts through the weakness, passivity, and half-measures of both "cuckservatism" and "paleoconservatism" to put his finger on the most fundamental truths and problems of our age. In these and a deep understanding of human nature he roots a sense of justice that is radical and revolutionary and yet timeless.
Greg does take for granted a familiarity with the "JQ", which is one of the more difficult "alt right" themes to wrap one's head around, so a good companion to this read would be Kevin MacDonald's The Culture of Critique: Toward an Evolutionary Theory of Jewish Involvement in Twentieth-Century Intellectual and Political Movements.

Did Greg Johnson predict the rise of Donald Trump?

In a chapter originally written the day after the 2012 presidential elections Greg Johnson writes “It is now openly acknowledged that this is the last election in which the Republicans can hope to win without appealing explicitly to white racial interests.”
Of course, Trump doesn’t explicitly appeal to white interests, but he does want to build a wall which would keep Hispanics out, and he seems unlikely to go to war for Israel. He also associates with many de facto white cultural events like NASCAR.
Johnson also says “[A] right-wing populist movement would focus on protecting the interests of the white working and middle classes… It would promote economic protectionism to restore America’s manufacturing jobs.”
Indeed, Trump has single-handedly made bringing back manufacturing jobs a major issue of the 2016 election.
However, Trump might actually bode badly for those who wish to found an all-white country. Johnson fears the rise of a conservative Caesar who would restore order and placate white people in America as their demographic demise continues on to the point of no return. This is why we have heard him comment on Counter Currents that White Nationalists must use Trump to increase white consciousness and prevent him from using them to further his ideal of an officially race-blind civic nationalism--albeit with a white flavor. His most recent opinion seems to be that Trump is necessary to hold off the forces of the Left so that the influence of meta-politics can metastasize among the white populace of the United States.
But to return to another point made in the same chapter, Johnson says a pro white political party must “exclude...free-market ideologues.” At first this remark seemed offhandedly exclusivist to me. In his book New Right vs Old Right, Johnson says whites need to frame both sides of a debate in a heads I win, tails you lose scenario so that in either outcome they win. In other words, each side should argue in terms of how their stance would help whites. I couldn’t understand why there was no room for a debate between, say, free market adherents socialistic distributists in his idea of white hegemony. Why shouldn’t free markets benefit white people? To discover Johnson's answer to this question, one must read the following chapters in order: “Vanguardism, Vantardism, & Mainstreaming”, “Brooks Adams on the Romans” and then “The Republican Party Must Perish”. The argument runs something like this. Whites should seek to frame both sides in a debate if and only if both sides would benefit white people. Part of benefiting white people means ensuring their lasting survival. Free market policies threaten whites’ survival, so free-market stances cannot be part of the debate. This is because of a theory laid out by Brooks Adams in his Law of Civilization and Decay. I won’t tell all here, but Adams claims the economic elites of Ancient Rome used three methods by which to remove power from the middle class and distribute it to themselves. The resulting decadence of the rich and impoverishment of the middle class lead both groups to curtail childbearing and ultimately die out. This is a bold but interesting theory based on a sort of sociology which seems to underpin economics. Johnson believes a white ethnostate would need distributist policies to keep power and wealth in the middle classes and thus to prevent a nation from imploding demographically. In short, he rejects free markets because he wants to save the white race. What other New Right authors have called Economism or subordinating social interests to economic ones is off the table for him.
While I agree that an economic system should exist to benefit the race and not vice versa, some pragmatic issues arise in my mind. For one, I’m not sure he realizes the austerity his call for stopping the importation of manufactured goods would cause in an age when goods such as computers utilize multitudes materials from all over the world. Unless the white country is very large, having say 200 million people, it will have to import some manufactured goods to maintain a modern standard of living. Even if it is very large, it will need to draw on resources from around the world. Furthermore, today we see people leaving homogeneously white Eastern Europe for multi-ethnic Western Europe for economic reasons. To expect people to live in relative austerity may work for some, but most whites would opt out. Poor areas tend to generate population increase but they usually export people rather than draw them near. For instance, the Amish exemplify a poor, high birthrate population. Although they increase in number by the year, they draw virtually no one from the outside and many of them leave for the modern world. In my opinion a white country would have to be prosperous enough to attract whites and keep them there, and to do so it would have to trade with the outside world and not do everything from scratch like the Amish. But at the same time the white nation would have to maintain birthrates in a way that keeps the population from decreasing and works in a eugenic rather than dysgenic direction. In my opinion, a balance should be struck between free trade and protectionism to keep the country healthy from the inside and make it attractive from the outside.
Anyway, enough of my opinions. Johnson's writing on other subjects besides economics is thought-provoking. He posits a humane way of dealing with people who want to become transsexuals. He also a strong message for modern day pick up artists who frequent the manosphere. His chapter on gay marriage entitled "First and Second Class Marriage" is very creative. His conception of the ideal marriage reminds me of marriage customs among the Franks prior to heavy Christianization, which prioritized childbearing above the platonic concept of permanent matrimony.
We also find out how a white ethnostate would form and who would be eligible. We see whether White Muslims would be welcome, whether he favors secession movements or Imperium, and what sorts of conditions he believes will finally motivate white people to found an explicitly white country.
And Johnson's wit is a delight. His satire "Kony 2012 & Jason Russell" had me laughing hysterically.
Near the end of the book, the reader is left with some organizational wisdom and motivation for continuing forward.
Above all the most striking thing about Greg Johnson is that he is serious. It's is not just an intellectual pastime for him, and he delivers. Everyone should read this book.

Nice and Tidy

The provocative title had me anticipating a desire to storm the Bastille but in actual fact I felt as if the author had thrown a bucket of cold water over me. The reality of white nationalism borders on boredom. Not only are we not to storm the Bastille but hijacking 747s is also out of the question. The well read and articulate author offers a cornucopia of white nationalist view points on a host of subjects and coming from a leader in that genre should be required reading for any white who thinks that a temper tantrum is going to solve the problems of the West. I can't make my mind up if Johnson is left wing or right wing. His comments about the elites and exploiting cheap labor abroad would suggest he is a leftie but then his attitude towards whites struggling to save the Nepalese or the Palestinians while their own country is being colonized would suggest he leans to the right. The strength of the book is that the author is a realist. The book is equally suitable for those who wish to be white nationalist and for those who wish to oppose it. I would especially recommend it for university students writing on the subject as a few quotes from Johnson would impress the lecturer with the inside knowledge of the mind of white nationalism.
